No it's not - there is most definately a correct way and an incorrect way.

You ride off the snaffle, and only 'pick' up the curb when extra brakes etc. is needed. As a double is only used now mainly for showing an awful lot of people don't know how to ride in one - your instructors included by the sounds of it.

PM FMM and she will give you the definitive answer!

i do ride off the snaffle & have hardly any contact on the curb, but there are different ways of holding the reins to do this.

my instructors are all very good thank you & know what they are talking about

Whilst this is being talked about...

I have a double bride but I have never used it as haven't felt the need. I've been working April and she is going well in a snaffle.

I was actually wondering... am want to do some more showing this summer and should I start to use the double at bigger shows and for dressage. Why do people use doubles? Is it just for show? I don't see the point if it's just for show or will it just enhance and refine what we have already achieved with a snaffle.

Don't worry I wont run home and throw it on, I would get lessons lol.

After seeing the pictures and reading the post the other day I realised I am probably holding my double reins incorrectly - hack in a pelham with 2 reins as my boy can get strong and have been riding him holding the reins this way for about 5 years!

Curb rein between ring & pinky and snaffle around outside of my pinky..

I tried shifting the reins up - to the correct way of holding them but felt uncomfortable holding the snaffle in between 3rd and ring finger.

Is my way of holding them totally incorrect?

my friend rides that way

however no idea if it is correct, sorry

i find that to confusing lol, i find the way i ride easy & i never end up with to much curb pressure

This is an interesting site. Scroll down to the bottom which goes in to great detail about how to fit and use a double bridle etc.

Double Bridle Use

I do stand corrected on one thing - this site does say that you can hold the reins in whichever way the rider pleases. However, I have always ridden off the snaffle, and for most of us that would be the accepted way to ride in a double.

But hoo-ya - that picture's not the way you described that you do it, in that picture the curb rein comes up to be the highest rein in the hand between ring and middle fingers and the snaffle rein is between little and ring fingers.

My way of holding it seems to be the writers chosen method but with one finger gap rather than 2.

Hoo-ya from reading your initial post I think the difference to the picture and to your described methos is that the snaffle should be lower than the curb - ie snaffle on the outside - this means you are riding off the snaffle rather than the curb.

This may not make sense but... top to bottom, bottom to top

Not sure if that means anything - i'd have to think about how to explain it better

ETS
* Snaffle rein under finger 3
* Curb rein under finger 2
* Both reins held by the thumb
