I have loads of coats, mostly musto which used to be amazingly waterproof and now after lots of washing are very leaky! Anyone else have this problemor know of anything to reproof them with? Thanks in advance.
I use Techwash which is for all waterproof clothing, some of my coats are years old and it seems to work really well. I recently used it on a lightweight NZ as well, but haven't used the rug yet to see if it worked as well!
Nikwax is brilliant stuff. You wash first with the tech wash and then reproof-still in the washing machine-with the reproofer. All my ancient coats work like new afterwards-you can see the rain beading into drops on the surface of the coat rather than soaking in.
I use the Nikwax spray reproofer. Don't think it's quite as good as the wash in stuff sounds though. I'll be changing to that when I've used up my spray.
wash with non-bio, no fabric conditioner, don't wash too often, dry away from direct heat and they will keep going for years. If you treat them like this and they leak the waterproof lining has probably worn off and you need a new coat.
I find that washing in any ''normal'' detergent is the killer.
Millets do an own brand all in one wash and reproofer that is brilliant, I have found it is better than NikWax and also cheaper. You absolutely do have to get the washed clothes hot after though. They say tumble dry or iron but I have found that popping them over a hot radiator is easiest.
Afterwards everything has that ''waterproof feeling'' just like when they're new!
Some jackets will say on the care label what reproofer or product you should use but I've also found on one or two jackets I have that don't say anything that Nikwax Tech Wash seems really good - it's about £3.75 for a small bottle. But that does quite a few washes.
