How do you know if a horse is right for you?

Just pondering really..... When I bought my first pony i knew he was the one for me when I was walking across the fields to help catch him. When I bought his chum, I saw his wee head over the stable door and again that was it.

Ive been thinking in and off about looking for a second ridden pony as there's things I'd like to have a go at that my first boy might not be ale to do for a bit ( if at all) , should I be looking for something that is definitely "love at first sight" or should I go with my sensible head?

Rambling over out comments much appreciated :)

I have the same thoughts when I look for a new horse...
I would go with both your heart and your head, keep looking until you find the one you have that instant connection with and has the ability to do the job you want to do.
Good luck x

I think it's like buying a house or a wedding dress, you just know! It's like everything feels right. I just jpknew the moment I saw my girl and my feeling was confirmed when I hacked her out with her owner who told me that around the next corner was a canter track. She took off full pelt because she knew it was there. After a while I saw we were approaching a road and as soon as I asked her to stop, she did straight away. I knew then that I could trust her totally, well as much as you can trust a horse.

I think they need to tick all the boxes and be your "type". If you don't feel anything for the horse IMO you're unlikely ever to if you just don't take to it. Equally however much you think its love at first sight, you're unlikely to think the sun shines out of its backside for long if it won't do its job.

As soon as I saw mine I knew. The first time I tried him he napped with me and his owner got on. The second time we had a bit of an unexpected canter ;-) But I felt totally safe and able to deal with him. Had him 3 weeks and he's definitely the horse for me.

I saw him across a barn of ponies and thought - I hope its that one - and it was. We were late and could only ride him up then down the road in the dark ( with hi-viz ) - literally 200 metres. As I trotted him back down he dropped his head and carried himself so well, I just got this feeling of how much potential he had - I wasnt wrong :-)
Everyone thought I had underhorsed myself and that I`d get bored but I love him to pieces.

Another love at first sight for me :D He came out of the stable, and I just knew he was the horse for me - when he was being shown ridden to me, I couldn't wait for the owner to get off so I could get on him.

Had "almost" bought 2 others before - one got sold before I went back to try a second time, and the other failed the vetting (thank god!) - but I had reservations about them both. No reservations about the one I got - and still none at all 7 months later :D
