So last night mid clip Soap saw a ‘ghost’ and leapt out of his skin and used the toes on my right foot to pivot on

this morning my last 3 toes are purple, and I can ‘feel’ my little toe when I walk. How do you know if you have broken a toe and what’s the protocol?... I’m pretty sure there is not much you can do, but I have a 10k charity run on Sunday which I have been training for for months and I want to get it better/stable asap so that I can run on it,, should I tape it to the next toe?... should I run this week or just leave it till Sunday?... I’m glugging my Crossgates arnica and RRA so that should help

Sorry I know not technically CR but you guys I’m pretty sure will have had the same injury if you own horses and have feet!

go to A&E (or your vets if they are closer and very nice!) and get them to x-ray it. if it is very painful then you prob have to accept that the charity run is not going to happen...

are you hobbling on it, or are you walking normally?
naughty pony. poor your poor toes.

Go get an xray, but they will not do anything for you, only thing you can do is tape bad toe to good toe to keep straight.

But if broken toe you would be daft to do 10k run............. and it will hurt!

I wouldn't bother with A&E as you'll wait hours & they'll just strap it/them.

If it's broken you'll feel sick walking on it. I'd strap it to the adjacent toe & take some ibuprofen to keep the swelling down. Definitely doing the right thing with arnica too.

Fingers crossed it's not broken

Hhhmmm well it hurts when I walk on it but not too bad so I'm hoping it's just the bruising that hurts, and if they can't do anything for it then there's not much point me wasting A&E's time. I'll just strap it to the other toe and ignore it! I can't not do the run I have raised £350 for charity and they won't get it if I don't do it!

Thanks for the tips guys, just wish we didn't have so many supernatural spooks at the yard freaking Soap out, big daft wimp he is!

Chloe, why not tell everyone who has given you sponsorship that you will run 20 miles as soon as your foot is better, if they'll still give you the money for the charity?!
i'd go for that...
you'd be daft to try to run/walk if your toes are very bad, you might well damage things further up trying to compensate etc...

gulp! because that's 14miles further than 10k!!!!! I don't think I could manage that with 10 good toes!!! ahahahhaha you have great faith in my running ability K
smile.gif
I will just walk it if it gets really bad, or maybe persuade a passing runner to give me a piggy back!

Little toes are pretty insignificant anyway aren't they? I mean if it fell off I wouldn't fall over, it's the big toe that's the balance toe isn't it?...

Chloe - go to Ciren A&E, they will x-ray it for you and likely to take under an hour (they are lovely and see loads of horse riders!)

At least then you know what damage if any has been done. If just bruising you can strap it up, dose up with ibuprofen and do your run.

If its broken, that's a stupid idea as you could end up having to have surgery if you don't let the bones set.

aaaarrrgggh I hate hospitals, I don't wanna go
frown.gif

as a compromise I 'll leave it a few days and see if it gets better, if it's worse or no different then I'll reluctantly get my a$$ to a&e

*goes off and sulks muttering 'stupid toe, stupid horse'*

i wouldn't bother with A&E tbh, have broken toes and fingers and not gone and i'm still alive!

strap it, ice it and rest it.

i wouldn't run this week and then see what it feels like Sunday- you could always just walk

If it was your horse, you'd get a vet out.
Why is it riders are so belligerent to getting themselves sorted?

You are being irresponsible to your sponsors by not going....

If I was closer i would pick you up and TAKE YOU, yeap i know it's a pain, but i promise you if your 'pinky' is broken and you don't get it straighten you'll end up with witches feet!!!!!! i'm speaking from experience here................

my excuse was i was stuck on motorbike in france............. and now i'm feeling it now due to arthrious(sp)!!! and bones not setting true...............

when horse did the same to me last year i waited a day until it became too painful. spent 3hrs waiting in A&E for x-ray then another hour waiting for doc to talk me through it. had only really gone to try and get pain killers as they can't do anything for broken toes. after all that doc told me to go to boots and get paracetamol and codeine, try to keep weight off it and keep icing it to bring down bruising. was back at work next day hobbling around but a good couple of weeks before back to normal.
so i suggest don't bother with A&E, dose up on pain killers but would probably rule out the running.

I would get it x-rayed - you have to go to A&E within 48 hours so just go. It is a nuisance but I really think it is sensible to go and get it checked out so you know one way or the other what damage you've done. As for the run - if your foot hurts before you run then the chances are you'll be hopping for the next week if you go ahead with it.

but if you delay then they won't x-ray anyway, i did this with a severe neck sprain (don't ask) and was sent to A&E by osteo (who refused to touch me without x-rays first) and A&E were really shirty and refused to x-ray me because i'd delayed by 48 hours...
as above, if it was your horse you'd be there asap. also, they're much quicker than they used to be, when OH put pitchfork through his bigtoe (niiiiice) they saw him within 30 mins, i was expecting it to take hours...

running sponsors or riding sponsors?... Some might say me getting on a horse in the first place is irresponsible to my riding sponsors!

Hahhahahaha

I will go if it gets worse.....promise

If this was Soap I would take the day off work and get the vet out but he's precious and my little toe comes further down on the list than him

Kick_On if I get witches feet they will look pretty apt on sat night (Halloween) might change my fancy dress to match them!

What is it with everyone having broken bits at the moment?

I think you should go to A&E just so you know either way and then can deal with it accordingly ie. running or not running.
wink.gif
If it is broken then Crossgates do a remedy for broken bones which, not suprisingly, I am glugging at the moment. I'll tell you how good it is when I see the consultant and my latest set of x-rays on Thursday.

Hmm have to agree with the majority here..

I kniow they wont do anything exciting if it is broken but at least you will know and can deal with it and manage it properly. My mum broke her toe years ago and didnt deal with it at the time and she is really suffering now because it healed all wonkey and not right.

Better safe than sorry eh?

I heard my little toe snap so I knew straight away it was broken. It was agony and in those days they couldn't splint it so I had to poke up with it. I was wearing trainers for ages as work shoes crippled my foot. Dont envy you.

Erm excuse me Mrs. Firstly, just because you're single handedly keeping A&E in business at the moment, doesn't mean we all have to and secondly, when I 'did' my finger last week you told me not to bother going. Do my digits not matter as much as everyone elses??
tongue.gif

Chloe - can't advise sorry (I never go to A&E unless drugged and dragged) but I hope the toes are feeling better soon.
