How do you know if you have broken a toe?...

I will admit that I broke a couple of bones in my foot and finished a weekend stallion inspection, complete with running (okay, I did it twice - the second time I slept in my riding boots at a horse show

) before showing up at A&E (or Emerg as those of us in the New World call it) BUT if you're contemplating running at all, get an x-ray. At this point it will likely heal up absolutely fine and you'll never have another problem but if you do something as daft as chopping the inside of it up with broken bits of bone I can pretty much guarantee you're looking at long term problem.

Little toes aren't that important but it sucks rocks to be in pain every time you take a step and not be able to do a thing about it. Not to mention that it makes doing horsey things quite a bit tougher (on the horses, too, since pained people tend to have shorter tempers). Oddly, little things like fingers and toes almost seem more irritating and don't underestimate how it's going to affect your riding to not be able to put your foot comfortably in the stirrup. If you can avoid it, I would.

Here speaks the voice of experience.

What is it with everyone having broken bits at the moment?

I think you should go to A&E just so you know either way and then can deal with it accordingly ie. running or not running.

If it is broken then Crossgates do a remedy for broken bones which, not suprisingly, I am glugging at the moment. I'll tell you how good it is when I see the consultant and my latest set of x-rays on Thursday.

Erm excuse me Mrs. Firstly, just because you're single handedly keeping A&E in business at the moment, doesn't mean we all have to and secondly, when I 'did' my finger last week you told me not to bother going. Do my digits not matter as much as everyone elses??

Chloe - can't advise sorry (I never go to A&E unless drugged and dragged) but I hope the toes are feeling better soon.

Darn, I hate it when I'm inconsistent with my advice....not that anyone listens to me anyway.

Or maybe I just have Chloe down as being a nancy Southerner whereas you and I are tough Northerners/Midlanders.
