i was wondering this as i want to learn, and 3 people have come up and said different things
1) provided the tail hair is not too long, whack the clippers out and go up the sides and do a bit on top.. eeek
2) do it with a comb and just keep pulling little bits out .. but what if the tail is inbetween lengths..and doesnt it hurt!!? ?
3) use one of those funny combs, and cut it slightly (dont worry not with scissors!) .. i think they are solo combs??

any help appriciated!! :D

I use a razor comb and haven't pulled a tail for many years now. With practice and bandaging it should be imperceptible from a pulled tail - I have had surprised comments over the years from purists!
Only remove hair from the sides in a long triangle at each side, tapering towards the middle of the tail. Never, never from the top! Slap some hair gel on under a bandage if you're competing and enjoy unblistered fingers and un :) p'd off horse :)

I'm rubbish at pulling tails- and have just bought a Solo rake which has tidied, but doesn't take it as short as I'd like so thinking i now need a Solo comb.

Sorry not much help...

Iam afraid Iam old fashioned and traditional and it would have to be pulled correctly, I use latex gloves to get better grip, also when it starts to grow back a bit but not long enough to get hold of I do it with plyers, but then again Iam a true perfectionist with horse turn out, to the point of ocd.

i use a fine tail rake and then tidy up the odd stray ones by hand. i used to do it Steeleydan's way but have had a few horses that really didn't relish having their tails pulled (even when warm post-exercise) so i don't want to put them, or me, through it any more... ;) ;)
i can get a really good result with a tail rake, fwiw.

By hand, every time. I can't bear clipped tails (they look utterly vile in my opinion) and I find tail pulling incredibly therepeutic. I do a little bit of all my lot's tails every day, so that it isn't such a mammoth task. A few hairs every day = smart tails and no grumpy horses, although I've only ever had one that didn't like it.

pull down both sides first (some people clip ) then work across in rows starting at the top,i.e. pull a bit miss a bit pull a bit miss a bit etc then do the same on the next row down until you get down as far as you want to go. Some times i tidy up with the thinning scissors, they work wonders.

For looks then I like a properly pulled tail, I just hate clipped or scissored tails - looks simply awful imho. If you can't/won't properly pull then leave it as it is. Fwiw I don't pull mine (prefer not too!) but I think nothing can mimic the look well enough so I leave them be.
