To make life easier…………… For instance, my boy hates to think he is missing out on anything and always like to be first, I have 3 to put out in the mornings – 2 in one field and 1 in another. I always put my boy out first just because it is easier.

It got me thinking about all these little things I do just to keep him happy so how do you panda to your horses needs/quirks?

I'm not sure I'd call it pandering . . . more a bit of give and take . . .

I don't ride in heavy rain because Kal hates getting water in his ears and spends all his time trying to turn his bum to the rain . . . of all the things to argue about, I figure this is the one that's not worth the fight. He isn't a competition horse who is required to go in all weathers - and I don't much like riding in heavy rain either.

He doesn't like spending large quantities of time on his own . . . so I make sure I'm up at the yard in the afternoon early enough to get him in before he starts stressing (although I do make sure he spends SOME time out in the field without his two "minders" . . . )

I try to set him up to succeed . . . that way we build on both our confidence and succeed together . . . pushing him too far out of his comfort zone generally results in general unhappiness all round (witness my fall the other week when I asked him to hack out alone for the first time at new yard the day after the hunt had been right through the yard/past his field . . . not too smart on my part).

Like I said, I wouldn't say I pander to him . . . but I do cut him some slack in some areas so that our life together is pleasant and fun for both of us.

I take it this is a follow-on to the "conformation not confirmation" thread?

Mine would probably like a panda - they look like they could be good solid scratching posts. :)

I feed my boy polo's to bring him in, makes me mad but he started planting on the way in in the middle of the cold spell and I tried everything else. It was just too cold to fanny about. Regret it now slightly but that is the only time he gets any treats at all and we have reduced the amount to 3 polo's. Hang head in shame, I pander to my pony :(

Yes I pander to my horse! I bought her a decahedron ball and she is completely OBSESSED with it. She won't finish her dinner a lot of the time without whinnying half way through for the treat ball, which I fully admit to actually helping her get the treats out of! :o

I have also been known to help her pick up the food she has dropped around her bowl when she is eating her dinner!!

Reggie would probably quite enjoy the company of a panda- they appear quite sedentary and unlikely to bully him...

On a serious note, he is the most spoilt horse around. He's given pretty much whatever he wants/ needs when he wants it. He is the sweetest and gentlest horse going and reacts so much better to kindness and people being nice to him that he is very easy to spoil or pander to.

I get confuddled on here sometimes :)

Melly has to be done 1st, in everything. Everything from feed/hay to being groomed first and having the 1st and last treat. She is queen bee!!
Seren is pandered to in that there are certain things she wont tolerate, ie her ears being touched, so she doesnt have them touched, she will not, underr any circumstances wear a mask in summer, but is fine to have fly spray all over, so thats what we do. Its little things that make life easier and more pleasant for everyone, as Polar Sky said :)

The amphibology behind the book. :D :D Not punctuation, but apt!

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons.
'Why?' asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.
'Well, I'm a panda,' he says, at the door. 'Look it up.'
The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. 'Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.'

Micah is a pain if he gets hungry. So I make sure I don't do anything with him when he is hungry. This is as much for me as him though.
Other than that I don't really

Ohh, my old boy we didn't tie up properly. He just untied himself. He was also left well alone when fed (he'd kick at strangers, and if caught unawares would also kick at us) and always allowed to be in front. Even when he was at the end of his life and was struggling with anything more than pottering gently, Reg would stay behind being lead out to the fields!

Apologies for the error in the title although maybe not as loving the replies. My excuse is that it was Monday morning and I was meant to be working :D

I'm glad I am not the only one to PANDER to his every need and I like the way of calling it give and take :) I'm not sure who we are making life easier for though - them or us. A bit of both I hope.

I dont really pander to my main horse at all, he's very easy to handle and ride although he's a sensitive sole so I guess I'm more gentle and quiet round him that anyone else. And to groom, I have to be very gentle brushing his face and he only likes soft brushes on his body... but thats hardly pandering as such.
