Having had to poultice ellie`s foot l was wondering if there is an easy way of doing it :) l put the hot lintex (if thats what its called)on then vet wrap to keep in place, then an old hessian sack and then duck tape :). I would like her to go out tomorrow and vet says she can but want to try and keep foot clean how do you do it do you dress it the same im worried it will come off :).

Nappies are really good over the poultice to keep the dampness / heat for a while, keep the poultice in place and also cushion the foot. They are also rather well made to fit a horse's foot - thanks Pampers! On top of that I vetwrap well and put duct tape. Or you can get waterproof poultice boots to go over it all, no idea if they work.

If you haven't had to buy nappies before! - I found small ones (size 1) are good for medium sized hooves - up to thoroughbred, say. For my ID-X with massive feet I'd probably buy size 4.

Poultice as normal then put a nappy over vet wrap then layer a hifi bag over foot and duct tape, you will need a stanley blade to cut it off though normal sissors wont do it, make sure you put the bag quite high up the leg but dont tape it too tight or it will do damage.

Having done numerous poultices this year, and none having come off in the mud in the field, here is what I do.

Hot, wet poultice on affected area, then cover with nappy. Vetwrap nappy on - no need for a whole vetwrap, half will do.

Then the most important part.
Get three strips of duct tape each one about a foot long. Stick the first one on a wall, then the other ones next to it, just overlapping the first one. Then get another three, and put them crossways to the first ones, so you have a + sign with the duct tape. Put the cross on underside of the hoof and wrap the others upwards onto the hoof, then one piece round the hoof holding it all on. It won't budge.
