how do you prepare for this

Took mare out today on her own as she has been hacking out really well.(never hacked on her own in previous homes)
We went new route on our own although I have been with friend before and there were cars in recently cut fields with men casting fishing rods.She was petrified ,we held up all the traffic she reared 3 times maybe 4 and spun round didnt try to bolt just evading.I managed to get her past although she was completely on edge.I held up loads of traffic no one was angry and I did make a point of thanking them all.
Oh dear Im going to make riders unpopular.

I just wish the drivers I came across whilst having problems hacking didn't get angry.

When you have hacked out with others has she even been in front?
 
Sounds as if you did all the right things. You just have to keep on trying to tell her it's OK. She'll come good eventually.
At least the drivers were considerate to you and you made a point of thanking them.
 
Yes she prefers to be in front .She used to jog all the time and I have stooped that which means she looks and thinks about things more rather than rushing past them.
 
She used to rear and spin constantly and has really improved.I can talk her past most things fortunately rearing doesnt bother me too much , its not great, but shes not trying to be a cow shes genuinely scared Im hoping she ll grow out of it.
 
There's only so much you can do - and sounds as if you did a really good job.

My 'bombproof' horse lost the plot the other day. Why? Because he noticed the alpaca's in the field at the end of the lane for the first time! Totally freaked him out!!

Exactly Cellie. I think that the best you can do is to ensure that they know that they can trust you. And if you say it's ok, then they believe you.
 
Still work in progress but theres huge improvments,poor little mite had 5 homes in two years no wonder she was so confused and nervous.
 
Firstly massive Well done's for getting her past the pony eating monsters, and don't worry about the drivers, you thanked them all and they would prefer a polite rider having touble than a rude one that whacks one of thier cars!

If I were you (and I am going through it myself with a baby horse), take her out in company and then the following day do the same route on your own. Her confidence will soar and you will know where, if anywhere she will look for spookies.
