How do you put a value on a horse?

Due to ill health it looks as though I am going to have to part with my much loved horse. If necessary I would be prepared to give him away to the right home, but I tend to think if anyone was serious about owning a horse they would be prepared to pay but I have no idea how much to ask. Problem is, he is not a competition horse. He is a pure arab 16 years, 100% bombproof happy hacker. He was trained for endurance racing but has been off the track for many years ( have owned him for 6 yrs). Any idea what, if anything I should ask for him?
 
If he is sane and healthy then he should have value. I’d say £1000-1500 would weed out the daydreamers but without completely putting off good homes.

If you are in the position to, and I appreciate it is not without some risk, but you might want to consider a short loan with view to buy. Will take a bit of oversight though. I’ve done it previously on a horse with low value who I needed to rehome but would prefer to have taken it back rather than it become dealer bait. First time it bounced back, second time it worked and sold
 
I price them by asking myself what I would be happy to pay if the horse wasn't already mine.

I'd put yours around 2.2k being open to offers - he's on the older side but if he's as bombproof as you say, he's worth his weight in gold to someone.

I agree with this, being an arab he will sadly have more limited appeal on the open market, however bombproof he is I don't think you are likely to get much over £1k and offering a short loan option could open more opportunities as well as giving you some peace of mind.
 
If I came to view a horse of that description and I clicked with him, I would be willing to pay between £1k and £1.4k. He could still have quite a few good hacking years in him and if some tack was thrown in too then I think that would be a fair price.

This, he sounds like exactly what I would love to buy if only I could afford a second horse
