Ok really green question here guys, so wondering how you go about getting water to your yard?

Our yard is across a lane from our house (as it just so happens that lane leads to a fire station ;) ) maybe no more than 75m.

There is no mains water, so wondering who we go to and maybe some ball park figures you have paid to have water put in (I know it wont be the same but just an indicator!)

Thanks in advance :)

It depends if you plan to do the trench work yourselves as that saves quite a bit of money. Also, do you want a separate meter? You would have to contact your water company if you want it on a separate account and they often will not adopt new meters as they are awkward that way

It cost us around £2500 to have a new meter put in privately and then a further 5 years to get the water company to adopt it. So best thing is to just lump it in with your household water. You need to get quotes from local plumbers. If you can't do the trenching yourself, they will often know someone who will do it for you. I would expect it to cost you around £1000 for a simple instalation of around 75 feet. Then of course you will have all the extra plumbing costs of actually setting up taps, drinkers etc.

Thanks Wagtail, yes we will dig it out ourselves (or a pal will :)) as far as a separate meter is concerned I hadn't considered that side (see how green I am?) but will put that to OH. £1000-£2000 isn't too bad as currently I'm carting water from the house over, but thats going to wear thin VERY quickly come winter!

Have a word with your water company. There are ways to put a water pipe UNDER a road without digging it up, but I can't tell you more than that as I don't know. If there is a drainage culvert under the road it might just be a matter of running a pipe through that. Someone on the British Farming Forum will know as I've seen it discussed on there.

Yes there are ways of getting pipes under roads without digging them up. The machine is called a Mole.
We got a private drainage company to sort out our water and I can assure you that they were a lot cheaper than any water board company.

The blue plastic pipe if fine as long as it is down deep enough not to freeze. Just connect it to your house supply or you will be charged an arm and a leg for the meter and for the water too.

What the eye don't see the heart don't grieve!

We're going through this issue at the moment with a business premises, and are looking at thougsands of pounds as the road may have to be closed to be dug up, AND you have to give 16 weeks notice of digging the road!

Another option is a borehole. Ours cost about £3000, with the pump and all the pipe. Last winter we found we could still use it even when it was -14.

Yes this is the way you need a man with a mini digger dig a hole each side of the road and a trench on your property the mole man then sends the machine thru and then you pull your blue alkthine pipe to the other side plumer then conects up to your domestic supply and fits a tap on the other end simples :D

this does sound gorgeously simply!! Looks like maybe there is an easy way round this, OH will be so pleased to get it sorted (read, to shut me up!) :D
