How do you ride?

Damn, I feel so boring. Never swear at horses, just a sharp nudge and oi if their naughty :/. I need to start swearing xD.
Showjumping kiddies tend to have sticky seats since some of the little ponies were buggers! Wish like anything I could ride like a graceful showing person!

Ponies I had were definitely buggers. I was the cheeky kid who watched others struggling to get their ponies (and sometimes horses! :o) over a fence and said "I'll jump that for you if you like". I got stuck with some nightmares but I wouldn't change it for the world. Taught me how to ride, not just give aids and expect.

I used to take my old TB gelding onto a local trainers gallops in my dressage saddle. It never affected his performance! I really really can't ride in GP saddles any more!

Many years ago my instructor and I used to gallop her trainer's GP and PGS horses in dressage saddle, double bridle... (with permission, obv!). Never had any brakes outside the school. Was brilliant then, would wet self today...

Another who rides defensively, I am used to babies so also have really wide hands and I hunch because of my dodgy lower back.

I generally try to stick to the old adage 'keep the horse between yourself an the ground' and try not to get hung up on any additional details as that on it's own is enough for me to be dealing with!! :D

Like a numpty at the minute. But in the past when i've been riding regularly i've been told i have a nice dressage seat by a few instructors. I try to ride classically. I fail by a long way but it's the thought that counts :p Not a showjumper thats for sure, i'm rubbish at that lol

I think "sack of potatoes" sums it up pretty well, if you imagine that the sack also has limbs that are each sticking out at a different angle... my poor instructor despairs of me because I can only get one part of my body at a time in the right place - the moment I sort out one fault, ten more appear! I'm going with undiagnosed dyspraxia as my excuse.

Badly :( :o When I ride my mare I start in the defensive position then as she relaxes so do I. I used to always ride in a showjumper style until I had to learn dressage and now I prefer to ride long :)

I used to ride for a showing yard, show cobs, and I regularly used to hear "your not showjumping now my dear"!

But to be frank, I'd not use the word style in conjunction with my riding as I'm not actually sure I have any but definately can get results so, probably more effective than style. X

I ride defensively too....I think they used to call it a hunting seat :-) great for jumping or bombing over fields but since I got my new horse, on which I've been doing some dressage it's like I'm learning to ride again lol

This is brilliant ^^ I sound just the same!

I find i ride defensivly too, from years of riding for a (reputable!) dealer, breaking babies and then racehorses. With plenty of swearing chucked in too - especially at nobber drivers!
Plus my youngster is a spooky sod so always have to be prepared!
Saying that, i think i'd be bored if she was an angel all the time :)

Generally my bum doesn't stay in the saddle, I loose my stirrups and I somehow have mud on me despite staying off the ground :D

It is reasonably well acknowledged on this forum that I have an aversion to sitting in the saddle and I spend most of my time hanging off one or other of the sides - sometimes more intentionally than others :D

If I've got a stirrup strap on, I probably have one toe hooked around the top of the stirrup and if I don't I probably didn't bother to put a saddle on in the first place :p

A lack of mud is also a sign that you have been riding too sedately. One should aways be lightly splattered.

My style is more racing, shorter stirrups, long reigns, pushing a horse towards a jump rather than collecting them. Most people hate it, but my ex racer who is set in his ways at 14 seems to appreciate my racing background :)

Can someone tell me how you ride defensively because I think that's the way I should be doing it and then I wouldn't hit the ground quite so frequently!
