hi im just starting my cob off jumping and have been walking her over a few poles in the paddock in hand and ridden she has popped the smallest jump ever on the lunge. i think she is doing well to say she has never done anything with poles before (shes 6) i was talking to someone the other day and they said to loose school her and keep sending her on, i dont want to scare her over them as shes a bit of a sensative soul, my aim is to get out hunting with her mebe next year, does anyone have any thorts or ideas on this thanks

Just do whatever you can with the facilities you have. I only have a paddock to work in and have backed and brought on to compete (mainly in jumping) several horses. I just start them off under-saddle walking and then trotting over poles (and things like tarpolin, helps keep them non-spooky to fillers etc.). Then just introduce very small cross poles and slowly work your way up. You can lunge over jumps as well, I dont loose-school purely as I dont really have a decent enclosed area. It does help them to learn on their own without a riding interfering.

Sounds like she's doing really well already you're going about it the right way! :)
Keep her on the lunge, going over tiny tiny cross poles and when she is jumping quite confidently, put it up by a tiny amount - at the same time, ride her over poles and take the ridden a step behind the lunge work (if that makes sense?) and don't jump her or take her over poles every time you ride :)
I wouldn't send her on over them if she's likely to get scared there's a small amount of comfort in being on the lunge for them I think - as suggested above, tarpaulin, tyres, plants, oil barrels etc are all good for despooking! :)
Good luck and keep us posted!!
