Any tips or remedies, products etc to stop a horse from chewing and ripping a horses rug ? I have tried numerous sprays but none that I have tried have worked.
I have heard that mixing horse manure into a paste and painting it on rails stops them chewing wood... Bit disgusting I know... Maybe as a last resort for the rugs?
Bit tricky that one. I have had a few liveries with that problem. One of my livery horses used to lead his field mate round by his headcollar. Every time he used to want to wander off to graze elsewhere he used to go and grab Joshies headcollar and set off down the field with him.
I bought a large spray of chilli water (cant remember the name but will look tomorrow if you haven't tried it) I got it from my tack shop and liberally sprayed all rugs, paying particular attention to sticky out bits and it is the only thing that has worked.
Am I very bad that I stood and chuckled as they tried grabbing each others rugs and pulled the most awful faces and immediately stopped their carry on?
My lad has trashed multiple field mates rugs
I have since bought a collection of 2nd hand 'decent' rugs to replace friend's damaged ones to save face as replacing them new as he seems to home in the newer the tastier
i gave up
iv'e tried everything to stop someone elses horse shredding my rugs ,he totally wrecks them
the only thing that would stop this horse would be a well aimed bullet
iv'e tried crib stop ,works if i applied it every day but at £12 a bottle this was proving expensive
iv'e tried various nasty tasting things and the thug just keeps ripping them ,soon as it rains it washes off what ever had been sprayed on
i even tried plastering tobasco sauce on last time it was amusing the first time he got a mouth full but it soon rubbed of the rug and he went back again
i survived one winter by buying an old tatty rug and putting it over the top of my good rugs and simply patching it constantly but this eventually became heavy and rubbed the horse
Personally, having my boy in a field with serial rug trashers, I have tried everything and now just put a ratty old rain sheet over whatever rug he is wearing and let them chew the hell out of that.
There's a spray for stopping pets chewing furnishings, its about £5 a bottle, iirc its called Johnsons. Not sure how long it would last if it rained as only tried it inside. Even worked on one that wasn't put off by soap or cribbox.
