How do you store bulky feeds like chaff?

My daughter’s horse is moving yards to one where we organise his food. He’s out during the day and in at night with haylage and has two small meals a day (handful of balancer and chaff with a few oats if he needs a bit of an energy boost). The balancer and oats are in bins but the chaff takes up so much space - we’ve filled a large bin but that’s barely made a dent. She’ll have her own tack room but it’s not enormous and everything needs to go in there. Any genius storage ideas gratefully accepted 😊

I keep it in the bag (Grazon - it is pretty much bale size) but I no longer have a rodent problem since my feral cats came to stay. Before I couldn't keep anything in bags

Another one for chest freezers. Just picked another one from up from Freecyle last week so have 3 now. Great for storing rugs too (rats chewed a huge hole in one of my rugs once)

squashing the chaff down as you pour it into the bin makes a big difference too. If I have to decant chaff into bins then I stop 2 or 3 times to really press it down and then add more. You can fit a lot more in then ;)

I have this every year - I put as much in the bin as I can then keep the bag with the rest in my car. Which means my car smells like chaff all winter... I think this year I am going to try without chaff and just feed speedibeet.

Thanks for the tips - I’ll try some chaff-squashing later 😂 (we just poured it in so that should help) plus I’ve found an old chest we used to use for garden storage which may work too
