How do you tell what size a foal will make?

I remember someone saying something about this last year...

It was to with measuring a part of the foal at a certain age and then being able to estimate how big he/she is going to make

Not sure what age it can be done. But you hold a piece of string from the fetlock to the elbow and then turn it so it goes from the elbow upwards and that shows how big the foal will be.

i dont know of any methods, but out of interest, how big is troy's sire? (im sure this has probs been asked already!)

I agree with the above post about the piece of string being a rough guide to how big he will be. They are so many schools of thought on how to guess a foal's mature height. It is also said that how he looks at about 3 weeks is how he should be expected to look as an adult conformation wise.

Measure from the knee to either the fetlock or floor (sorry cant remember) should convert from inches in to what he will be in hands

Chambon is on the right lines. Measure from the dimple at the front of their knee to the top of the coronary band. 16 1/4 inches for example would be 16.1hh

Ooh another string test, LOL!! The last one was right

.

You need to make a knot in a piece of string - place the knot in the centre of the knee, gently take the string down to the coronet and measure the distance. If it says 16 inches then the colt will make 16hh......or that is the theory anyway.

I think you can do it at any stage as something tells me that this distance never changes throughout the horse's life.

would this work for a yearling ? .. heard that too tia about this area of the leg doesnt change .....

rachelle comet is 16.3hh and miss carjanju is 16.3hh so depending on her feeding also i suppose she could reach the 17hh mark ???

ahhhh lol Im only 5ft3 .... ah well

When my boy was born he was very 'wickle' so much so that the vet gave me a heart attack and said he would make 14hh at most, well he's 16.2hh now so ya boo sucks to the vet!!

I read something about a foal at birth being 60% of its adult height, which would mean Harley would only reach 15hh, mmmm dont think so the way hes growing!!!!!

Was told Freckles (Harleys mum) would reach 16.2/3 as her parents were 16.2 and 16.3, but at 3 years old she never grew an inch over 16hh (thank goodness) I do think Harley will be bigger than his mummy though for some reason, even though his dad was only 15.3hh
