SO... just got on Znoopy (rising 3) today in our outdoor school, and was walking him around on a long rein, before I tightened up his girth, when I heard some horses cantering towards us in the field the other side of the fence. And remembered that there was a hunt going on in our village today... oops...

Znoops heard them aswell, and stopped on the spot.
As they came into view, he sat right down on his hocks, I thought OMG he's never seen horses galloping past before, and dreaded what he was going to do next.

There must have been more than 20 horses galloping past and he stuck his ears straight foward and his head and neck high in the air, whilst still sat on his hocks. I just sat very still patting his neck, couldnt really think what else to do!

He watched them al go past and out of view, and then with a great big snort...........

......he stood back up properly and contined to walk around on a LR as though nothing had happened!! WHAT A STAR!

I know some of my horses would have been over thefence galloping with them!

sounds like you've got a little star there! I think my 4yr old would be pretty much the same to be honest, the most excited i've ever seen him is over his dinner!

my youngster had a similar experience with a 19hh shire cross charging at him when we were out, he put in a couple of strides of trot but no major fireworks (which i was bracing for) may be a different story if he has 30 horses charging past

OMG, what a star!

Not sure what my boy would do TBH... think it would depend on his mood! He LOVES hunting which wouldn't help. If he was in a stroppy mood like today we'd probably be joining the hunt (with or without me depending on how much of a fight I put up lol)

Reminds me of a couple of years ago when husband was about to venture out first time on a four year old mare on it's own. (been backed five days, we back out on the lane and go off on a hack straight away following another horse)
He got on in the yard, rode up the drive, saw the hunt were coming so turned back and waited an hour Set off again and happily hacking along a mile from home to the crossroads when round the corner at full pelt come the hunt! No choice really but to go too, so said four year old got an hour and a half's hunting, opened gates, popped a couple of fences etc... it was well and truly backed after that and sold to the first person to try her four months later..
I reckon you got away with the hunt today, next time it'll be Yee har, that looks fun Dad, let's jopin in!!!

What a darling.

I always remember being very proud of my boy at one of our first ever shows. There was a Traction Rally going on down the road and the warm up area was next to the road,,,,with all these chuffing, tooting, Steam engines going past. There were horses exploding all over the place but my boy couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Thank goodness!

However in other situations he has been a total pleb, so it is more luck what he takes a dislike to.

Lets hope this is a sign of things to come with your horse.

My horse wouldnt be bothered by horses cantering past, shes more bothered by the scarey monsters in the bush. Now if they were actually in the arena with us that would be a completly different matter

My QH would possibly have summoned up the energy to flick an ear at them but wouldn't dream of actually doing anything unless she was told to. My Arab would have performed some very interesting airs above the ground but wouldn't have moved far as she's too pregnant to be bothered to do much.

Isn't that feeling when the back end goes down "interesting" ? You never know just what is going to happen or in what direction! Znoopy sounds like a very composed chap.

My boy sits down when hes scared, it is quite funny as he is a 17hh monster and high set neck but if anything scary he sits right back on hocks and sinks then when alls well he says phew and stands up again!

Wow, I bet you were very relieved!!
Mine would probably have bucked a bit, piaffed a bit, then continued to be schooled like a turbo-charge loon! Makes a change from lazy old mule though!

Godzilla would have been through the fence and after them pretty damn quick and the 6yo would have had a snort and a danc about but I'd like to think she'd have behaved herself

yours is an absolute star.
Mine would have been off like a shot, he has problems when someone is out on a hack with him and is in front we have massive tempertantrums with bucking rearing and plunging if he isnt allowed to race the horse in front.

What a little star!!
Bet your life flashed before you when you heard them coming,

Mind you - my mare jumps out of her field when she hears the hunt, so would prob be better on her than off her - a small amount of control would be beter than none.

Aww bless he sounds a real sweetie!!

Judging by how mine react when the shoot comes through our land every fortnight, i don't think i would have had much option tbh. I think i would have either been joining the hunt or performing airs above the ground in the school!! LOL

No way! What a lovely horse you have! Think he's a star in the making with an attitude like that!

Mine would have bolted I think! One would have turned and jumped everything in his way, another would probably have wanted to follow them! Not sure what my others would do....

B would have done his very best to get to them!! he'd have been spinning and running backwards when I held him back! And most likely threw in a buck or two for good measure, he doesnt like being held back!!

And he's 25! so I think your 3 yr old sounds like a little star!

Aww bless! He's going to be a saint when he's all grown up!

As for till's, hmm... could go either way, she'd either not be remotely bothered and do little more than twitch her ears or put on a fantastic gymnastics display and show off her amazing gallop! She's pretty good at listening to me though so I hope that would be her response!!

I would of been ditched and horse would of joined them. I probably would of caught her about 3 hours later when she had enough.

very impressive!! Archie dosent canter off either if horses canter around in the field above our school, he starts doing passage!!
grin.gif
At least i know he can do it!

My mare on the other hand bucks and squeals and tries to pee-off with you if they are being stupid in the field!!
