I soaked the scabs off and have been bathing daily in warm water and hibi scrub, drying and then applying "muddy buddy" by lincoln and its looking a lot better.

Its on the heel of one of his white hoofs about the size of a couple of 50 pence pieces.I am just trying to get on top of it before the weather really turns.

Are you supposed to keep removing the scabs? or leave them?

Thanks for any comments

I use sudocrem, I use it straight onto the scabs and just re apply until they soften and come off. I then gently wash the area and put on some more sudocrem, usually twice a day. Just got a horse from Ireland that had it fairly bad on one leg, cleared up in a week.

Also if you are using Hibiscrub make sure you really foam it up, apply to the leg and leave for 5-10 mins, then wash off, and make sure you don't use too much :)

Mine had very slight mud fever earlier this year during the very wet period. I just dried them gently after turnout, put sudocrem on when she came in and turned out with a load of vaseline. And it really helped, and also put vaseline on in the lorry before we went out hunting, and dried them before putting her travel boots back on. It healed fine by early April, and haven't touch wood had a problem since. It was the first time in two years of owning her that she had developed mud fever, and in 2012 she spent half the winter out at night! But anyway, it's gone now so hopefully it won't be back again this year.

Good luck with your boy OP, hope it heals soon.

My boy had mudfever last year for the first time so it was quite a surprise especially as I trim his legs all year round because of mites. Somebody told me to mix sulphur with pink ointment ( I think that was what it was) and that certainly seemed to work after washing legs with hibiscrub. Incidentally I recently found out that his insurance doesn't cover him for mudfever in the future even though I never claimed. Whilst I'm on the subject can anybody recommend anything for leg mites. The vet gave him an injection which seemed to work this year and I do use pig oil but if anybody has got any other ideas would love to hear. Sorry there is such a lot going on in this thread!

I wouldnt keep washing it with hibiscrub its very harsh on skin and can aggravate skin conditions, I find hypocare gets rid of it if you use it twice a day and keep the area as clean as possible, they do a special one made for mud fever now I saw it in the saddlery last week although I have just used the basic one with good results, I also find putting sudocreme or other gloopy creams just traps the bacteria in and not letting any air in to heal it.

I used zinc and castor cream for a couple of days to soften then applied purple spray. I don't really fiddle with it and only remove scabs when they're ready. It's almost cleared up now.

Oh, forgot to say that I'm not 100% sure it's real mud fever as there wasn't any mud when it appeared. I think it's sunburn that gets infected as mine is also on white heels, the rear ones.

Yes I have heard good things about hypocare - will look out for this - I agree with you about the sudocreme/vaseline though just traps everything under it.
