How do you treat thrush?

My horse is prone to thrush and I normally try to keep on top of it by using purple spray, but this is more of a preventative measure than a cure - what do people use to actually cure thrush once a horse has it?

Someone on the yard mentioned caneston? Has anybody else heard of this?

Thanks! :)

Canasten is for treating human thrush. (It's also great for ringworm.)
It should work, but won't stick to the frog like Stockholm Tar.

I use NT dry in any sulcus that has opened/deepened at the heal and then just the purple spray, the difference really if you are treating is the frequency of use (daily until all traces gone).

dilute milton in a spray and occasional soaks when necessary. Have also mixed up some sudocreme with some athletes foot cream (we happened to have that in the house rather than canestan!) and squirted it in the deep bits with a syringe (the sudocreme makes it stick better)

I think it depends a bit if you are dealing with just fungal or some bacteria too.

NB the pedant micro in me must point out that human thrush is not the same in anyway it is just that the active ingredient is antifungal :)

Leucillin spray...my new favourite product have tried it on loads of different things and it has yet to fail

Purple spray is useless and just a dye pretty much! You want to try the BLUE spray which is for foot rot in sheep. Works wonders on my mare. I also found cutting out all mollasses from her diet has helped as well.

Hi. My boy suffered really bad with thrush, and i have all ways used peroxide, it works wonderfully but can dry the hoof in other areas, so i use a very good hoof oil too. I supose that caniston could work, how ever would think it more need to be super strength to work on the ggs. Good luck.

just posted on Vet forum re this. The peroxide I buy is 6% ,this seems rather weak? Also lots of people dont seem to use it anymore?

I use Kevin Bacon hoof ointment. the one that comes in a tiny red bottle, it is coppery in colour and is a thick liquid- it says on the bottle that it cures as well as prevents thrush. It was recommended to us by a friend years ago and has never failed for us- our horse gets really bad thrush all winter because he has a tendency to poo and then step backwards into it every time!
It is expensive and stinks, but I have found it works just as well when its slightly diluted.
