How do you use them?

Im planning on using pellet bedding- probably wood, under a shavings bed for a very wet mare- not just one patch but two large areas. Those of you that do this, do you dampen pellets first or put in dry? And how deep? At the moment I’m using dry and seem to be throwing a lot out with the wet bedding.Any experiences welcome!

When I've used pellets, both straw (my preference) and wood, I've always put water in the bag with the pellets for some time before taking it out of the bag. If possible, warm water.

I use straw pellets without any other bedding on the top and I just add the bag of unsoaked bedding to the top of the bed. I also only take out the wet when it comes through so that the bed is more stable.

I just put a light scattering of straw pellets under my straw beds dry. My girls are pretty tidy but they are so absorbent I didn’t need a huge amount.

I’m not sure how they will work with shavings as it soaks up much quicker than the pellets but a deeper amount of pellets might work or as you say dampening them.

I part soak mine before use. I have a gelding who normally wees in the same place so I add a hod of part-soaked pellets each day to that part of the bed and cover with my normal bedding (miscanthus/shavings mix).

I have a massive trug that I keep separately with the pellets in (used to have straw pellets and my horse would eat them so I got into this habit). A bag generally lasts me 7-9 days depending on how long he's had to be in for.

I use a full 30litre bag of wood pellets in the pee spot, circle it with deep shavings, and spread another bag of shavings over the top. I used to dampen them, but now don't as the dry base holds more urine. If you have a box walker, you may have to dampen them to prevent them being kicked about. It's easy enough to skip out with a shavings fork, and the wet is removed when it comes to the top.

100% this. Use a bag approx every 5-7 days x

When I was just on pellets I'd add water to the bag before use until my bed was damper then I'd just mix in dry.

I now use under large flake shavings. I am not too fussed about the pellet layer being spotless so I just cut out wet patches then sift so it's more the fine grains than pellets, I keep a 2 inch layer and mix new in dry. Then a good layer of shavings over the top.
