How do you worm your dog?

Vexed by product I use, Drontal. Comes in tablets with apparently neatly quartered lines on pill to dispense appropriate amount. Three-quarters of tablet recommended for my dog's weight. But when I cut pill with sharp knife, rest of it disappears into powder. Have tried mixing resultant powder into stinky pilchards, but normally greedy dog refuses to touch it.
These pills aren't cheap. Can get whole one down him no problem.
Point is, why don't they sell them in smaller quantities whole? Do they know this will happen and make a bit more money because you then have to buy some more?
Any better products out there? Any information gratefully received. Thank you

Just give him the whole tablet. There is plenty of leeway in them, so you'll not be overdosing him.

Try it in a split sausage or a bread and butter sandwich, I am pretty lucky that my current dogs eat any pills whole

I can split them pretty easy never have any powdery bits. Try a finer blade, like a carpet knife blade. I just snap with me fingers.

I did the last dose with my fingers too...never really wormed before but this one is an out-and-out shite eater

when the tablet breaks up into powder it tastes really strongly apparently. betty was a right shite about eating wormer, and eventualy the tablet descended into a powder/paste... and this was why she wouldnt eat it.

i would just give the whole tablet- wont do him/her any harm.

best way i have found is hiding the tabs in sardines/oily fish.... down in one gulp!

Open dog`s mouth ,place pill right at the back and shove it down till dog farts By the way..they always lick their nose if they have swallowed it down..weird but true.

My old bitch could hold a pill in her mouth for ten to fifteen minutes, clamped between my knees with her head held at a vertical angle....then spit!

The fart bit and the lick are essential here CC..no fart ..you have`nt put it right at the back..but of course your dogs DO have wierdly long jaws. Bit like crocs really

I leave it on the coffee table and casually stroll out of the front room - after he comes and checks I'm in the kitchen he runs back and *steals* it If all fails, the cheapest, nastiest pate with a hidden tablet does the job.

Advocate spot-on does fleas, ticks, worms, mites etc. Both of mine will eat pills but need something stupid like 2 and 1/4 each so I'll stick with the spot on.

I use Advocate through the winter, but it doesn't do tapeworm, so he has a tablet just for that every 3 months (he's up the yard a lot, so the vet think it's worth it). Advocate does not do ticks either. So this summer H has had spot on Advantix, and then a 3 monthly Drontal.

I just spent an hour trying to get a bloody drontal into B.

Our freezer has died to we have A LOT of cooked sausage / chicken / burgers hanging around. I thought I would be nice and shuv it in a sausage for her. Little git ate the sausage and left the pill. This game continued for quite a while. Then I decided to just shuv it in her gob myself, I forgot how much of a wriggly little creature she is.

I was temped to take my razor to her face to stop her hiding the pill in her beard.

Evertually I gave up, threw the drontal across the floor in a paddy and the little mare took herself off and ate it.

I am not impressed with my dog tonight.

Lol cbmcts! My little mutt will gobble down anything in tablet form that is NOT a worming tablet, little darling that she is, so she just gets it shoved down the back of her throat, although she does still manage to spit it out sometimes... If you do struggle with tablets then there are a few spot on treatments that do worms as well as fleas. As far as I'm aware they are only available from vets though and you will need to use a tapewormer (think these are all still in tablet form) a few times a year as the spot on products only do roundworms. (although they do a mind boggling array of other parasites as well!)

I can't remember the brand but our vet just gave us big 'chewy' worming tablets. I was cynical as my mums old dog is very fussy but even she chomped away and licked up the crumbs, they must taste meaty, they made the whole experience much easier.
