....in the wild, our coseted and cared for creatures get injured on a regular basis. I don't understand how any zebras ever survive to adult hood. Any ideas?

Because, horses are domesticated and breed to live in domestication and half the little cuts and problems that affect a horse that is ridden do not generally bother feral animals.. Lets be honest, ok so a bog spavin might make a zebra lame.. but i tell u now.. fulle don adrenilin/ IT WOULD RUN..

We cotton wool our animals as they are domesticated.

There are over 190,000 zebra that do the yearly migration. Over a 3rd of them will not make it, either because they get ill, injuried, killed or die from old age on the way.
How do we know how long the average zebra lives. They may only make it to 10 years old.

Apparently the average life expectancy of a zebra is 9 years in the wild and up to 40 in captivity, says it all really

Saying that during the coaching era (1860's ish) horses didn't tend to live much past 9

I've also seen on TV shows a zebra mauled by a lion with half it's rump missing recover, they are uber tough.

... does anyone know where I can buy a zebra, preferably backed, to make 15.2hh?

They imported a few into Wales last year....

Where my OH comes from in SA they have Mountain Zebra - who live in Mountains

. Those ones can cope with masses of snow and serious sub zero temperatures as well.

No I don't want one of those, because then I wouldn't need to buy any rugs
