How does a Welsh pony open a five bar gate in the middle of the night?

I had an exmoor pony as a child. He escaped from every field he was in. Once he absconded (with a 2 year old filly) for four days and was found over 20 miles away, it was shortly after we moved to exmoor so he may have been heading home? The poor filly had very sore feet and was much slimmer. Once he took another pony with him into a barley field, he killed that one... Once he escaped his stall at pc camp and stole all the hard food, shared it around a bit and gave another pony colic, that survived but he was banned from camp for evermore. Once he jumped out, joined a pack of hounds and hunted all day. His escapades were legendary. My mother hated him!

He sounds awesome (though possibly didn’t seem so to your mother when he went missing )

My last donkey could open just about any kind of fastening. Only the latch on the IAE stables did not get undone. The day before he died he managed to undo one of those bolts which have to be turned to get the small lumps through holes and have a swinging back plate than needs raising before the bolt can move backwards. Not sure if you can see on this picture https://iae.co.uk/product-agriculture/5-rail-cattle-yard-gate/

Ropes and knots, spring clips, ordinary bolts of all types, stable bolts even those said to be horse proof. He could disconnect electric fences if there was a crocodile clip within reach, pull up electric fence standards.

He was one clever beggar.

Naughty!! Very glad they are all safe after their escapades!

My welsh pony is in disgrace after getting out of his starvation patch into long grass and refusing to be caught, with the consequence that he now has hot front feet again.

So he’s back on box rest until they are cold, and decided to punish me by lifting my other pony’s stable door completely off its hinges whilst tied outside his stable.

Heard a big loud bang, came outside to find one door on the floor, and a pony halfway out of his headcollar....

Got to love them....!!

OH has made the gate so that it can't be lifted off it's hinges and has agreed to putting in gates at the end of our drive. As a temporary measure I am going to block off the entrance at night and leave the field gate open so that should they get out again into our garden they can find their way into another field and hopefully not trash my veg garden or my beautiful garden which I have worked very hard on. Anyway out again tonight once this storm has passed, I hope I can sleep!
