Sorry for the poor quality, been having a nightmare trying to find a bridle that fits, this one is made up from various different sized bridles!

Also, any tips for softening new leather?

Thanks

Gigglepig - it may be the photo but the browband looks a tad snug to me? Could be totally wrong 'cos I'm squinting! Also, throat lash could be a fastened a little more. Nice neddy!

And I also know the noseband is too long (fine around his nose but too big over his head). I want to get it shortened but have no idea where to take it? Any reccommendations?

HI Gigglepig - he is a big boy then isn't he? In that case I would oil the browband and literally try and stretch it just a little. You just need to lengthen it so that the headpiece is not pushed up right against the base of his ears, which it looks as though it may be doing. Totally understand re: the throatlash! I'd ask either your local saddler or a cobbler about the noseband - if they can't do it they will know who can. It's a pretty simple job anyway.

Not really he just has a fat head! Short but wide hence being a challenge to find a bridle to fit!

When I get a new bridle I get a bottle of leather dressing and pour it into a bucket and then put the bridle (in bits) in there and leave it to soak, works a treat

Good tip! How long do you leave it for?

My sister used to do this to new bridles, but TBH I always thought that this over did it, and I never liked the way the leather felt after being soaked in leather dressing.

With new leather I prefer to use something like effax, and give it a good couple of coats. For bits of the bridle I need to be really supple, like the bit end of the cheek pieces, and the buckles on the reins, I will supple the leather by flexing it back and forth until it is supple, and then putting the effax on.

The bridle looks good though - agree with the comment about the brownband.

I'm lucky with the horses I have at the moment, that they are all pretty simple to fit bridles to - but I know what it is like with horses with in-betweeny size heads!!
