I have recently put a bit up for sale that is half an inch too big for my pony

It occured to me today that its only 6mm or so too big either side which doesnt seem a lot

I was always taught that you should be able to just about get one finger between bit and side of mouth but I have seen pictures of horses with an inch or so of bit showing at the sides (whilst at rest)

I'm still selling the bit but my question is what is ok and how does your bit fit? Do you think it matters or depends on type of bit for example?

a finger each side would be correct. if there's an inch each side it would indicate the bit is too big and would probably pinch the sides of the mouth. :(
as far as im concerned its the same with all bits!
