New pony arrived today, only found out today she had an injection to stop pregnancy as she had been caught by a stallion along with 2 other mares, other mare is in her last month of pregnancy now. This little pony was a broody before and has been out of ridden work for 2 yrs. Whats the chances shes going to drop a foal?

The injection should have brought her back into season within a few days, if you can find out if that happened then you will know whether it worked or not. Difficult to tell with a broody, one of ours that was used for that before coming to us has never lost her belly, we even had vet out to check because she was so 'obviously' in foal, only to find out she wasn't.

have a look today, and you can always get the vet out:)

I will when I am up later, had foals from 6 mths but never had a in foal mare so stressing quite a bit as our stables arent suitable for mares and foals, plus ours all live out 24/7, farmers here have ran out of hay and haylage as it is as well, plus shes had 4 live foals and 1 dead before, only just got her but don't want anything to happen to her or a foal.

What beautiful colouring she has!

We used to have a shetland who had previously been a broodmare and looked permanently ready to drop even though she wasnt pregnant.... alot of broodmares like people just never lose the belly after pregnancy especially if theyve had a few big foals! a scan is your best bet but even there not 100%!

Thank you, she is lovely. I have a little sec A who has never had a foal, but looks like shes about to drop lol, I am quietly crossing everything shes wormy or just fat and unfit, but I will wait to hear from last owner and then get her to contact the vet who gave her the injection and take it from there x

Do you have a local vets you could take her to or one that does free call outs if booked in advance - for a £30 consultation it might be worth a double check

Previous owners have been known to stretch the truth so I'm not sure I'd be happy with the word of previous owner that the definitely had the injection !!

Difficult to say have seen Broodmares who have had lots of foals and maintained the droopy belly look.

Best advice i can give is get the Vet out, the fee is worth it for a definiiate answer this late on they can feel the foal easily so no confusion :)

My vet will be a £45 call out and around £35-£45 to examine. Old owner had her jaged July last year at her vets instructions, apparently she does have a mummy tummy normally though. Going to check for movement when I go up :-(

hmm tricky if it's close to £100 for a vet check (we're really lucky we have one vet who will look at them in the trailer in the carpark for simple things - vacs etc, and another vet who does free call outs on a Monday - makes a massive difference to the cost.)

Does the old owner have photos of her from say 2,4, and 6 months ago so you can see what the developement of the tummy has been (if any?)

Do you know and trust 100% the old owner? I'm naturally cyncical and don't believe anything anyone tells me these days - especially in relation to horses !

I know for peace of mind vet is the way to go but £100 is a lot of cash at the moment. I will ask them, pony has been in a field doing nothing for nearly 2 years, they said shes always had a tummy and they had her scanned when they 1st got her and vet said it was like that beacuse shes had atleast 5 foals.

Looks very like 'Baby Belly' and also the root of the tail looks quite prominent. Really looks like you may have a foal quite soon.

Why would anyone run mares with a stallion if they don't want them in foal? I think the stallion may have got the better of the old owner.

Shes had atleast 5 foals before so most likely has a tummy from that, from the front and back you cant see her tummy, slightly from the back but only if shes standing slightly to one side.

Bobbs don't look like they are about to produce milk and rear view is slim!

Maybe just lacking in muscle and will look better after a few months of work.

Thanks, thats what I am hoping for, shes done nothing really for 2 yrs and after 5 foals shes bound to have a mummy tummy, I do after 3 children lol. I "think" the colt got in with the mares, I know one other pregnant and due in around a month, this little lady would be due the same time if the injection didnt work.

I'd absolutely go with if you're worried get the vet to check BUT from the photos she's quite slim from the rear and front, no udder development and her tail head is no more prominent than my mare's now after her last years foal and not being back in work yet.

Baby belly I'd say (sitting up straighter and holding my baby belly in).
