I have realised that my horse and I don't actually go that far. Today I took a new route and went along a couple of bridle paths I have never been along before (only been riding around here for 5 years!). Anyway, when I got home I got out the ordnance survey map and measured how far I had gone - it was 8 miles. Which means that usually I probably only hack around 3-5 miles normally.

The 8 mile ride today was really nice and as Manni is so fit we trotted and cantered an awful lot of it and it took just under and hour and a half.

My new resolution is to get out and about a bit more!

It normally depends on what day I'm hacking out, if its after work I'd normally be out an hour with a couple of long trots and a canter if i can get it, but on a weekend it can be around 8 -10 mile if its nice weather!

I dont know what it is in miles but I know its between half hour and and hour and a half timewise depending on route, more on the odd weekend. My pony is fairly new to me and we are still getting to know each other (and getting fitter.) We have rubbish hacking so I cant wait till we are ready to go a bit further :D (he naps so I have to build his trust in me first before I go off for hrs!)

Depends, normally in the week a hack takes about 1.5 hours light or dark, at weekends a Saturday ride can take 1.5 to 2 hours, a Sunday ride sometimes 3 to 4 hours and be about 13 miles.

I love going exploring my short hack is a hour long if we walk it about 40 min if we canter a bit. On a sunday we used to go out to a pub thats two hours away accross many fields and bridleways. And we are right next to a set aside called the gallops which can be done in half hour but I very rarely just go round that now.

And we went from 9-5 once, I actually had a blister from my saddle. we are lucky there are so many farms and one farmer let us use his trough for the horses, though took horse to water like &*&% would it drink!!!!!

I couldn't say in miles but me and a couple of my friends always went out every sunday unless we were at a show and we could be gone up to 8 hours sometimes, bring some money with us and stop at a pub for lunch. We would have a race across a field and whoever lost had to hold the horses outside :D

I remember once we saw a sign 'Welcome to Stroud' we must have gone about 20 miles and it was getting dark so had to ring my mum to get us with the trailer to bring us back :p

I would class 45minutes as a short hack.
I'd then normally nip in the school after a short hack.

On the weekends I like to hack for 1.5-2 hours, not exactly sure of distance.
I'd happily hack all day though as me and nag love it.

a normal hack is about an hour and a half ,in the week in winter a quick wizz round the block approx 40 minutes. i used to go out for about 3 hours hacking on my own exploring

We have rather lovely hacking, which is fortunate as we don't have an arena!
As its my only real means of keeping him fit I tend to go a fair distance...
Vary it from day to day though,
sometimes 5 miles, sometimes 15 (have even gone on a mini pub crawl which was around 24)

Just do what feels right by your horse, and how much time you have!

Koko, great story! I love stopping for a pint with the horses in the summer.

My last share horse was in an area with absolutly amazing hacking so we would go out for about 90 mins and that would be about minimum, we went out for about 6 hours once thought it was brilliant. We got home, untacked, and all four of us (that's two riders and two horses) just plonked down on the grass (no rolling for the humans tho :D )

Its an odd thing really, when I used to run, I would happily go out for an hour and do eight miles. My lazy old horse does 10 miles in two hours on a draghunt and claims he has done a days work!:eek:

Typically 7 miles, limited by time more than anything. 10+ when time is not an issue :)

For anyone who wants to measure and log their hacks you can use this website: http://www.mapometer.com/en/

You can save your hacks and then share them with others by sending them the link.

Thanks for that link - am def going to have a look at that. I love to know how far I've been and to look on a map and see where I've been!

I was nearly to your village (well maybe about 2 miles away) - I could've popped in for a cup of tea!

My last horse I hacked out anywhere between 2-4 hours with stops in between, it was great.
With new horse its all slow hacks (walk/ trot only) and longest time out was 45mins and only got to the end of road and back, the weather does not help much, still its a work in progress , and lovely people to help me bring horse on.

Anything between a couple of miles and 10 miles depending on which way I go and if I'm exercising more than one, in summer I used to go on 6 hour hacks... and bareback with my other ned, used to end up with a wet sweaty bottom and legs though.

I get scared being on 6500 acres of forest that I will get lost! I pick a point which I can see for miles as my "this is the way home" and just go as far as I can still see it :p probably the longest I have been out on the forest is 2 hours

Most rides around here are circular, which is good, so you don't have to go out and turn and come back.

Shortest ride is round the block (10 mins); then another circular ride is about 20 mins, good for a quick flip; then there's a whole load of rides which are about an hour where you can have a quick canter on the bridlepath; then an even better ride of an hour-and-a-half'ish with an even better bridlepath/canter; if you want to go up to the common its forty mins to get there and then you're on some nice country and can go in a big circle which will be about three'ish hours - fantastic!

Re. post above worrying about getting lost in big forest - um, don't think you need to worry coz if you are concerned, just give your horse a loose rein and he/she will find their way home! Never fails IME, but be careful of doing it too often coz horse might take you home earlier than you wanted next time! (plus you're encouraging a bad habit) But if you are genuinely lost, or anxious, or whatever, try it and see - horses and dogs will always find their way back home, I've never known it to fail.
