How far do you travel in a day before competing?

Heading down to Wellington Horse Trials for the CCI-S 2*. Our dressage is on the Saturday and jumping on the Sunday, but was just wondering how long people travelled and then competed in the same day?

The journey should take 3 hours and we will be staying on site on Saturday night. As long as I give him a few hours to relax after the journey when we arrive on the Saturday, would most people consider it ok to do the dressage that same day and not stay the night before as well?

Yes I would do that distance wise. I might prefer to stay the night before as well though just as less risk if a hold up or other problem and to avoid leaving at an eye wateringly early time.

We travel the racehorses up to 4.5 hours each way on the day of racing. Any further we generally go overnight. Though we have been known to do 6 hours each way for a 60 second race ???

Frequently do 3 hours then compete, I always make sure they have a good couple of hours to unwind and relax. This is either dressage or showing.

I’d make the most of it and go the day before if possible, but you will be fine going on the day but you’ll miss a potential day of holiday in the show bubble! I’m going on weds for a Friday-Sunday 3De 1hr from home next week…!

When I did eventing, I would travel up to 4 hrs each way and compete.

My horses were fit and used to travel.

TBH, it was me who felt it more, if I were the only driver as well as the rider! Fortunately Mr Red was quite obliging about driving for the longer ones.

We live in the extreme SW Scotland and every event is a long way! Cumbria are the nearest taking 3hrs and the horses compete and return the same day. A dressage test will be fine If your horse is fit and used to travelling. Good luck.
