How far do you walk?

Blackcob - what a fab site, thanks very much for posting it. i have been meaning to drive my morning route for ages to see how far it is - just under 3 miles jogging for the usual one and 3.5 for the longer one.

does not sound very safe running with a buggy, not sure how i will cope with children and dogs one day - although the jack will hide in the bottom of the buggy if he gets a chance!!

This woman used to jog with her dogs before she had kids so they were well trained. The problem is thinking dogs magically know what to do in any given situation immediately - so 'if I go for a walk with the buggy and the dog, the dog will automatically know this is a nice thing and will walk to heel'.

No. It's a dog, it's not a person, you need to train them to do most things that you want them to do, aside from behaviour like peeing, chewing, barking, steaming towards wherever they want to go etc, which is normal dog behaviour, we just don't like it because it doesn't fit in with our lifestyles, neighbourhoods, carpets, upper body strength.

No worries, Frankie7, I know there's a few runners on here so thought it may be of some use. :) I do also like the automatic calorie counter thing, makes me feel very virtuous! I exercise enough to warrant two extra Snickers a day. :D

My OH works nights so when he comes home he takes our spangle straight out and when I finish work I take her out or we both do in the evening.

If we take her to park off lead and take ball throwing device I think she does lots more mileage so say 40 mins for that

Some mornings OH takes her up woods for about an hour off lead, then I take her to park in the eve or approx 45 min walk on extendable lead up cycle path

I'd say she roughly gets hour in the morn and 45 in the eve, longer on weekends

It makes me laugh when I watch cesar milan and he asks people how much excercise their dog has, they look at him gone off and say something stupid like, well we've got the back yard !! duh and they wonder why they have problems !?! HELLO

I always used to take 2 dogs out with a pushchair. Well to start with it was a big silver cross type pram, then as children got bigger I used a push chair. The dogs never pulled, maybe got their paws run over a couple of times at first but they soon learned to keep out of the way.:p The only problem was that the dogs used to make a bee line for any pushchairs they met, which did used to give some parents heart failure.

my working dogs (cocker & lab) (and yes anyone who knows me will know i do have a springer too but he's on restricted walking as he's old with arthritis:() come with my to the field every morning - so that's a 1mile cycle ride each way with them running flat out beside me - plus them running about the fields whilst i feed etc etc - so that's approx 30mins fast running off the lead

in evenings - again they are never on lead and we don't have to do more than about 200yds on roads walking to heal - and we walk anything from round a big field (takes about 20mins) to a nice 6mile walk - either way they are running the whole time

they live in their room during the day as both OH and i work (so left about 8am-6pm) and are back in there over night - so they are out from 5.30am-8am in mornings and 6-say 10pm at night :) ob over weekends they are out all the time during day

(and they are all rescues retrained to work and cope very well with that thank you ;) no house trashing - no running off on walks - happy healthy dogs :))

And mine - the MIL has a very large grassy garden and when she dogsits for us I always come back to find her spreadeagled on the patio, having not moved an inch.

Blackcob -- your mother-in-law still agrees to dogsit for you? Wouldn't think she would after you finding her spreadeagled on the patio like that. Sounds like the dog's a bit much for her. Snork!

Stella and Prince get walked five miles every day, but this is split into a three-mile walk, a two-mile walk, and then some dog park time. Considering their breeds, I'd say I go above and beyond the call of duty. At weekends we hike, and all summer they're at the beach. Prince would be quite happy with a 20-minute walk a day. Of the pugs, he is the puggiest, laziest one I've ever known. Leash walks are an important part of his routine, otherwise he's going nowhere fast.

This week I've incorporated swimming into their routine (well, holding them in a pool, hydrotherapy-style). They are zonked at night.
