I was thinking about riding my boy 18 miles home tommorow across country lanes and a bridle way. He isn't really fit but he has been doing about 1.5 hours 4 times a week hacking (walk, trot and cantering) and 15 mins trotting lunging each day for the last three weeks.
The question is if I mainly walked him am I right that it would take about 4 hours and is it likley to be too far?

If needed I could stop about half way for a rest and water etc.

I'm planning on doing a 14 mile pleasure ride at the end of the month and I don't suppose Patches is that much fitter than Bomber.

I don't envisage any problems with her and will give her plenty of breathers on a long rein if she seems tired.

I'm sure you'll be fine. How come you want to hack him home? Do you not have transport?

The bloomin lorry has broken down the last two times I have used it - once today - we were stuck by the side of the A14 for an hour waiting for the rescue truck. Luckily the teddy pony was quiet as a mouse! OH thinks it will be OK now (a hose had come off) but I am not so keen and TBH I like the idea of hacking

Yeah I don't blame you then. Might as well hack then! You could always call hubby if you think he's struggling anyway...and prey the lorry keeps going!

I'm sure you'll be fine. I bet it'll be you aching on Saturday, not Bomber!

18 miles should take you 3 - 4 hours if there is a fair amount of walk - im doing 16 miles on easter sunday pleasure ride - dont know there will be any pleasure though - im not fit - been riding my bike backwards and forwards twice a day to the yard for the last 2 weeks in the hope that it gets me fitter in time x x

I am a bit worried about my back actually! Last time I did 4 hours my leg wouldn't lift over the saddle when I came to get off - so I just fell off! This is why I was thinking about a half time picnic

we are near ipswich - we are doing ride at castle acre in norfolk (anglian distance riders) we are staying over night as its a fair distance to travel horses then do ride - hoping to complete it in 2hours 45 mins - but there are 3 fords to cross and a long stretch of pigs and piglets - my horse is a novice and not good with live stock so it may take 5 hours!!!!

not very far away then! god knows what she ll do - ive ridden past those damn pigs all night every night for a week now - all i think about is pigs pigs pigs!!!! i am double dosing her calmer that day - and i will be taking rescue remedy myself (double dose!!)

Apparently the base of rescue remedy is brandy - so I would just take a hip flask - for medicinal purposes of course.

good idea! my friend says she doesnt want the word PIG to come out of my mouth from the moment we leave the yard - do you do any pleasure rides?

No - my boy hasn't been up to much for a while - he has had an infected sinus, which is why he is at the vets at the moment but he is better now so I will start doing more with him - in fact the vet has said he has to have lots of exercise - so I suppose that means that both of us will be getting fitter

oh dear - sorry to hear that - i hope he recovers quickly - have you ever done a ride? how long has he been poorly?

No - we have never done one but I will start to look at them more now - he has had problems for about a year now.

Oh You poor things - you must have been so worried - so glad hes on the mend - when you are ready take him to rendlesham forest or is tunstall nearer to you - we do our training there as going is good - maybe ill see you at one of adr rides!
