How far would you let your horse go away on loan? We have a lady on our yard who won't let the horse out of her sight and insists it must stay on the yard, whereas I am happy for mine to move.

Just wondering how far is too far?

Well I put my 3 in Spain out on loan and I was here LOL!! I let Splodge go to Cambridgeshire and then he went off to by Manchester, so no, distance isn't an object, the person is.

As long as Maiden stays in the country, I'll be happy to let her go to the right person. It'd be lovely to keep her within visiting distance but for me the home and the "owners" will be the priority, not the location. Can't be too fussy!

If it were a person I already knew well and trusted then anywhere in the Uk.
If it were someone I knew less well or a complete stranger then the horse would stay close by.

I honestly don't know...I am the person who owns said loan horse, rather than being the loaner. Just trying to decide how far I feel comfortable with, however if I feel comfortable with the person the distance shouldn't matter.

I didn't know the lady who owns the horse that I want to loan but we spent a long time talking on the phone and she really liked me, thankfully. So much so that when she was offered money for the same horse, she turned it down in favour of waiting to meet me!!

this is a really good question! i want to take Frankie down to Cornwall with me (him and me at the moment are in Bournemouth!) so not too far but Cornwall isn't the easiest place to get to!

mmm.....now all i need to do is persuade Frankie's owner.....!

cc if you are ever worried about him i can always go see him as he is pretty close to me ??

I loaned my horse out about two and half hours drive from me and i would never ever do it again. It was the worst thing in the world and it all ended very badly. Looking back i think it was all because i couldnt see her often enough, i had no idea what was happening to the horse and didnt know any other horsey people in the area. Not a good idea IMO, i will never loan again but if i did it would have to be either on my yard or very close by and only to someone i knew or knew of. Too many weird people out there!

My friend has just loaned her horse out to someone that is a good two hours away. What swung it for her was the people she was going to. She had a huge intreast when she advertised her for loan, and no one that was local was suitable, but the one that came that was a fair distance away was, and they were happy to drive down on three or four times to try her out properly in lots of different situations to make sure that both parties for happy and that they were well suited.

We got Beau on loan with view to buy, simply because of previous bad experiences!

I emailed his previous owner a few times, went to see him 2 days after seeing his ad, he was 3 and a half hours away, we were the first ones to see him and she decided to let us have him.

It was me who insisted on the loan agreement and I would email her every week with pics and an update, I always offered for her to come up and see him, but she never did.

We have bought him now of course, but I must say if he had been my horse there is no way I would have done what she did, afterall we could have lied abut our names and where we lived, she didnt check!
