How far is your tack room from the stables?

Literally 2 feet away - in the same building next to the stable, very handy! Saying that, I do keep my nicest saddle in the house... but again that is ridiculously close, about 10/12 foot from the stable block. Completely understand your dilemma - I'm tempted to say go for the bigger space as your tack room can never be too big. However in wet and windy conditions it would be nice for it to be closer for you. Is there anywhere you could tie your horse next to the bigger building so that you can take the horse to the tack rather than the other way around?

My tack is locked in a shed about 20 yards away. Everything else (grooming/rugs/feed etc) is all in a shed next to the stable. I would probably choose the closer one if it meant everything had to be further away.

Mine is inside the barn and the stables are on the front of the same barn - depending on which stable the shortest distance is about 5 yards and the longest about 25 yards (I do love my tack room tho - all the bridle hooks saddle racks are labelled and it all looks beautiful in a v rustic way ...

Thanks everyone for all your helpful replies - very interesting. We have downsized (age etc.) and I really do miss my huge tack room, feed room and two dedicated rug rooms. However I don't miss all the constant work that went with such a large property. This new property is so much easier to manage but obviously available space is more cramped if I want to keep everything in the garden boundary to avoid the dreaded planning authorities, who are very difficult to deal with in this area. It's all about compromise and I really do love a big tack room, all beautifully laid out, but I also hate walking 'miles' with a saddle in the rain. The other option is to put up stables next to the bigger building but these would then have to be smaller to fit them in to the space. Decisions.....grrr!

Mine are at home so we a row of stables with an enclosed hay/feed store at the end. This also has a rack for headcollars, everyday grooming stuff and for chucking rugs on that are in everyday use. At right angles to the stables we have garages which are locked and alarmed and the end one closest to the stables doubles as my tack room, storage for clean rugs and all the other stuff I accumulate. It's also a freezer room, storage for kids old toys and anything else that fits in there!! The joys of having them at home 😉

I'd go for both, keep most used items by season up close and use the larger area for storage. My tack room is about 5 metres away from stables but we have a shared lockup in the barn 30 metres away this is what I do.

ditto this.
our tack room is approx 10 yards from the stable block.
other liveries have taken to these horrific tack trollies that take up the whole tack room which i am constantly moving about/tripping over.
i can't even see how they are quicker as once you have loaded the blinkin thing up, dragged it over two door steps and into the stable block, you could have done two trips!
i just put my hat and boots on, grab my grooming box in one hand (which has horses boots in too!), whip under one arm, bridle over my shoulder and saddle in other hand. jobs a good'en!

I have a tack room in the same block as the stables however anything valuable is kept at home about 100 metres away

In your case I would go with the space that is easiest to secure and where you are more likely to hear anything awry regardless of distance

Pretty near, it's at the end of the block of stables where my horses are. If I tack my horse up in the stable I have to walk round the corner

I'd choose the most secure option. We used to have a lovely big she'd as a tack room. Lots of saddle racks, huge shelves for rugs, it was lovely. Everything got stolen. Nowadays it's all hidden away all over the place. I can't even find things myself sometimes!

Ours is kept indoors, and depending on where the pony is going, it gets taken through the back door and 300ft down the garden, or the pony comes through the garden and is tacked up in the front garden which actually is only 10ft from the front door.

I share a large tackroom with my daughter and a friend. The tackroom is next door to my horses's stable and my daughter's stable is 4 stables down from mine.
But it always seem to be ME lugging bales of shavings etc. to my daughters stable, because 'It's right next door to you'! I'm thinking of moving to the other side of the yard ;)
