I am really paranoid about horse thieves as I own a Piebald and wondered apart from having him chipped and freezemarked ( which doesnt seem to be a deterant) what could you do to put horse theives off stealing YOUR horse?

I wonder if dying his mane or tail would do it ? lol

im really paroniod at the moment as some horses were stolen not far from us the other day, mine are microchipped and have padlocks chains etc, and big scary dog(well not very scary relly but quite big

) mine are in at night so should be ok, still worry though

Put a cavanvan evenvjust a little old one, seems to give them doubt some one lives in them. Freezemark is a must, microchip isnt as effect. As i was told a thieve isnt look for your horse is looking for horses like that, any chance he might get caught he wont try, he'll go for the other horses without freezmark etc. Make sure all the horses are marked etc because a thieve will have to take the whole field or none. Please reliese a paddlock does jack all... he'll cut a hedge down and fill it in again if needs be!

I am very Paranoid at the moment, esp as i was riding the other day in the menage, which is viewable from the road and some Gypsy's were standing watching me.

grrrrrrrrrr there has to be something surely?

I'd like to ask a pykey but I dont know any lol

Im sure sticking a double barrell up thier noses might work but sadly we are not allowed to do it. shame that

Unless you plan on dying bright-blue / green or pink not sure it would do much good

I suppose you fit a GPS tracking device to the horse

No idea if it would deter horse-thieves, but at least you could track the horse. Would have the added advantage of being able to locate the horse if he's played Houdini in his field or just dumped you out on a hack too!

Although I'm not convinced that you can get small enough GPS devices yet to make this workable.

freezemarking really does work, in addtion you can stencil the freezemark on to any rugs your horse wears so it is obvious even if the horse is rugged, and put up notices relating to freezemarking.

Don't think there is much more you can do other than freezemark & mircochip (mine has both) and put signs up stating that there are marked. Paint postcode and freezemark on rugs too. I keep my piebalds legs clipped and mane pulled as think traditionals are more appealing.

***You can't blame all horse thefts on pikeys***

Don't be so sure about the dog, thieves will just turn the dog loose, or feed it, or drug it if they are determined enough, although it might put off the casual visitor. At the end of the day, all you can do is make your PROPERTY as undesirable as possible, if it is identifiable they know they can't be caught with it in their possession and it will be difficult to dispose of, so marking everything, including your horse, is still the best defence.

I have been involved in the recovery of a number of stolen horses and can assure you that 'Freezemarking' does work.

Not only is it a visual deterrent to prevent your horse(s) from being stolen but in the event of it being stolen a freezemark can be read by anyone so the horse can be easily identified.

99% of stolen horses that are freezemarked are recovered.

Sadly Micro-Chipping can only be detected if a scanner is used and unfortunately there are about 5 different systems and the scanner of one system will not recognise another systems Micro-Chip.
