Say you had a fairly fit horse, how far would you be happy to hack to a lesson?

Would you hack further for flat and less far for jumping?

Would you not hack at all?

Earl grey and galaxy for your answers!!:D

Before I got my trailer I used to hack regularly to events etc. They were all about 3 miles away. I'd have been comfortable having a lesson afterwards, either flatwork or jumping, as I find my lad goes better after he's been loosened up on a hack. I think around 3 or 4 miles would be the limit for me though.

I hack everywhere, no sand school or transport at my place, today I'm going 45 mins to a school, use that for 30-45 mins and hack back! As above, horse is fine but I'm not!

Agree with above, horses would be ok with a fair distance but I would be knackered :D
But I am old and knackered anyway, poo picking wipes me out! :D

I used to hack 20mins to my lessons and it wasn't a bother at all. Our local shows were a 45mins hack away and that was fine but I wouldn't want to be hacking much further than that.

If the horse was fit enough I would do 5/6 miles each way no problem. Would really depend on how long I hacked for normally, one happily doing long hacks should be fine with two shorter ones & a lesson in the middle.

Not fort a lesson, but I hacked 10 miles to a hunter trial, went round twice, then rode home. Pony was very fit though, and still trying to go flat out most of the way home!

Don't want to sound like an oldie saying "Back in the day...." but I would hack 5 miles to pony club, ride several hours and then hack home. Three days on the trot when it was camp.

It's all relative to the fitness of the horse But when my horse was fit, I'd hack 8 miles to a show, compete in 3 classes and hack home.

I'd hack up to 8 miles for a lesson (give pony an hours rest, have lesson, and then either head straight home, or if a tough lesson, give pony 30 mins - 1 hour rest and then hack home).

Hacking to and from would consist of walk and trot equally.

I used to hack about 20-30 minutes to a lesson (depended on how late I was :o) Duracel cob used to do the hack there (mainly walk), do an hour's hard flatwork lesson, then want to go very very fast wherever possible on the way back

I would happily hack up to an hour each way if the horse was fit enough, and you were under no time pressure to get back. You can always get off and lead if your horse is struggling on the way back :)

I hack to some lessons, takes about 45 - 50 mins depending on speed walking / trotting (not keen on doing lots of trotting on the roads).

Not sure distance wise as the last section is up a small byway which we have to walk as the surface is all stones :(

Do this for flat and jumping lessons. First time I tried it it was for 1.5 hours XC lesson and had full intention of leading pony home, however, he was still in fine form and we got home quicker than we did getting to the lesson

Pony was in fine form after, rider was not :o

I have hacked 5.5 miles to a gridwork lesson (1 hr) on my fit TB, she was in such a hurry to get home it only took an hour!
