I was slightly disgusted to see a horsebox on the A14 today being driven by some complete muppet at the best part of 80mph:eek: Having seen footage of horses being travelled at more sensible speeds, it is surprising just how much they have to move about to keep their balance on the vehicle, and I think there are some drivers who could do with seeing something similar to be honest.

How fast do you guys go?

I just feel very sorry for the horse in the box today, the A14 is not the smoothest or straightest of roads and it can't have been having a nice journey:mad::(
 
I just couldn't quite believe how fast she was going - kept checking the speedo:eek: I hope she didn't have a horse on board, but the side and back windows were down, so I suspect she did:mad:
 
Strangely enough i was thinking about this today. I would never drive a box or pull a trailor as i know i can get carried away when i drive and would be too scared that ill go to fast. Iv seen a few accidents in trailors when driver has been going really slow so i know it could be so much worse when going fast

Driving the shetland, at his speed, as he has short legs,

Driving the horsebox, maddeningly slow, cos it scares me, and I aim not to hear them bang about in the back!!!!!

On motorways I usually try to keep up a good road speed, up to 60 MPH (which is the legal limit for a caravan or trailer). On A roads then 40 to 50 MPH, depending on the road.

Yesterday on the M4 and M5 in strong winds, we never went above 50 MPH, as it was just too windy.

I am always thinking about the horses when towing, but I also consider other road users. On our way to a fun ride yesterday, we got stuck behind someone towing very slowly and it was frustrating even for me, and I also had a fully loaded trailer. 30 MPH on a fast main road is just a little over cautious I think.
 
I think you have to drive to the conditions I have a limited lorry so its 56mph on the motorway and dual carageways if its light traffic and fine weather, if its realy busy i just tuck into the inside lane and stay there and go with the flow , A roads sometimes 40 is fast enough so I just trundle along at what seems right and pull in and let the build up past rather than going faster ... I hope they make limiters mandtory on the 3.5 ton vans and toy horse boxes as these seem to be driven at stupid speeds one flew past me in the out side lane at 80+ was a race trainers !!! maybe there getting the TBs used to going fast.....!!!
 
Have to say I stick to the speed limit of the road Im on and never speed atall when either towing or driving the horsebox. Theres so many cameras around anyway its not worth it.

Is the A14 dual carriageway then? Is only 50 if single carriageway I'm sure - was going on description of the road and assuming single carriageway with the description:

A14 is dual carriageway with loads of cameras!!! big lorrys should be doing 50 smaller 7.5 tons and all but the smallest car type vans 60MPH!!! anything towing 50 and solo cars 70...
 
In the car, sometimes too fast.
In the lorry, usually quite slowly. On small, windy country roads about 20ish, I need to know I can stop if I meet a tractor/horse/etc. On single carriageway, upto 50 (max speed limit for 7.5t lorry), but often slower. On dual carriageway upto 60 (max speed limit for 7.5t lorry). On the motorway, I CAN go upto 70 but get scared and rarely go above 60 with neds onboard, and only if it is straight and flat.
 
absolute max of 55mph if smooth dual carrigeway/motorway, less if windy/rubbish road surface etc.

in the car-far too flaming fast most of the time, but im constantly trying to wedge 30 hours in to a day!
 
Between 50 and 60mph on the motorway, if decent. I don't want my horses travelling any longer than necessary when its safe to go at a decent speed and I have a very new horsebox with a good engine. Nevertheless, I still have to overtake sometimes, there are a surprising number of drivers who go at about 40mph, which I think is dangerously slow for a motorway.

On B roads, whatever speed is appropriate to the road - if straight and wide, up to 50mph. If twisty, as slow as I need to go to stop my horses losing their balance - I have a horse camera so can check on them.

These speeds would all be slower where the weather conditions or other traffic indicated.

I am guessing this box was empty, in which case the normal rules of the road would apply to it if it was a non-commercial vehicle. I don't close my windows when I'm not carrying horses and I quite often use my box to move furniture or take my downhill mountain bike to races or training venues.

Dual, but it does have bends in it and the surface is not the smoothest. It's not the worst road in the world, but you would want to take it a little easy with horses on board.

I hope the box was empty!
 
Dual all the way now (well at least between Newmarket, where I get on it, and the M1, where I get off):)

TBH it could be the best road in the world though - IMO 80mph is too damn fast for a horsebox:eek:

dont care if it takes 20mins longer or some people have to wait, would rather the horse gets there in one peice and willing to climb back in to go home.

Depends what in and where...I tow IW trailers with a 4x4 and use a 7.5 ton horse box, towing on the motorway I'd sit at 60 if I had the space, pretty much the same in the lorry although slightly faster, same on a dual carriageway, on a single carriageway or country road the speed would be dictated by the road and conditions, allowing me to stop or manouvere safely.

I'd rather not creep along at 30mph with a huge queue behind me, as you're asking for people to try risky overtaking manouveres in sheer desperation to get past, leading to me having to brake suddenly myself. However if its a narrow country lane...unfortunate but they have to move at my pace..or the pace I deem suitable for the road/horse/conditions, but I will stop to let people pass me if its practical.

Pet hate....drivers who think you can stop on a sixpence and cut you up..or don't indicate when you're coming up to a roundabout, so you've had to virtually stop expecting them to cross your front, when instead they turn off left before you.
