If a driver can't back their car or isn't aware of following traffic, I'd be concerned that they could quickly find the brake when a child runs out from behind a parked car.
Hi all
Interesting to hear your experiences! I've actually had a lot of lessons but haven't towed in a while. Max towing speed on the road was 50, I was doing 40: the horse is also a very nervous traveller on his own, the towing vehicle and trailer are very light. I had experienced drivers with me in my car a few times and indeed that day had someone drive out with me in their car in front but unfortunately they were not able to come back . It's like when I passed my driving test all those years ago I was a bit nervous when I first went out alone- I fact I was nervous getting in my car for the first time to drive (having driven over 15 years) after breaking my hip and not having driven for 3 months ! Everyone drives v fast in mk because most of the roads are 60mph; I am currently accompanying a friend who is learning to drive and have every sympathy for him! Only thing I regret is not putting L plates on!
Ps yes I can reverse the trailer.
I'd be interested to know how many people tow on their own and how many wouldn't go out alone/always have help?
You can't put L plates on as you are not a learner. I had to go alone from as soon as I passed my test. I am seriously aware of traffic behind me. However I don't hang about that much. I would suggest more lessons and to become more considerate of other drivers. The one persons actions were not acceptable. However neither is a person towing holding up a huge queue of people.
I nearly always tow alone and always have done. I didn't have to do the test so have just learned as I've gone on. OH (a traffic cop with an HGV licence and lots of experience of all types of vehicles ) took me out a few times without the horse to begin with but we soon realised it wasn't going to work. I think we nearly split up during one lesson! I therefore paid for a reversing lesson with a local company, which was invaluable, and off I went. I'm a pretty confident driver (and person in general) so have just taken it all in my stride. I have pulled over a couple of times when I've had a big queue behind me and a convenient pull in but generally I just slow down when there's a decent long straight stretch to make overtaking easier.
If you want to put any plates on, you could put P plates on, but I think anyone who is going to be considerate will be considerate anyway and plates could make an aggressive driver more aggressive as they'll think you shouldn't be on the road if you're not confident / capable. That is of course a load of rubbish and their problem not yours. Just keep going as you are. 40mph is not a terribly slow speed to be stuck behind.
