I have Quarter Horses so I know a bit more about their speed and that they are capable of running at around 50mph.
TB's can run at 40mph and it would totally depend on a number of factors as to how fast your horse could run, and over what distance would have a bearing.
We had a mile gallop at my old yard and I took my ex racehorse up there and timed him, he did it in 1m33 which is equal to 45mph isn't it? unless my maths is very bad of course!
Hey thanks everyone, it was just that a girl on my yard and her 14hh pony- admittedly speedy pony said that today she galloped him alongside her dads landrover and she did 45mph- i thought this was surely a bit far fetched!
As for riding to work, what a fantastic idea unfortunatly my horse does not do being alone and would never agree to spending the day parked outside!! lol never mind
I wouldn't question the girls integrity, but definitely the Landrover speedo would be suspect!!!
I used to trot my old pony at 17mph on the road, I have no idea how fast she galloped as the speedo on my brothers motorbike never worked!!!

Is that where I think it is ... parellel (sp) to the railway line
Quarter horses are only fastest over a quarter mile. They cant hold it up for as long as TB's. I guess thats why you dont see much quarter horse racing?
