Here is my 11 yr old connie x andalusian, 15.1.

I am forever being told he is fat. He certainly looks a porker beside my friend's skinny TB. I got a lot of weight off him over winter but he beefed up after the spring grass and 24 hr turnout. He hasn't put on any weight since the spring flush. Now I need to decide what to do with him!
He is out 24 hrs, ridden 4-5 times a week, fed 2 handfuls cool fibre to take his calmer, and some lo-cal for vit/mins.
Should I muzzle, exercise more, strip graze or leave him as he is?

Thanks guys!

A little on the porky side bless him, but not majorly obese or anything....he looks like 'good doer' type :)

I wouldnt say he was massivley overweight! Perhaps a couple of pounds off wouldnt be a bad idea, but, (like my Fell mare) connies and andalucians arent ment to be ribby, also, their bums are ment to be apple shaped, so no, I wouldnt say he was a chunk at all!
*Slinks under a rock and prepares to be shot down!*

Thanks, I'm less worried now. He has always been a chunky chap, he's not built to be slight! However his fieldmate is such a hat rack my lad looks like an elephant next to him. I will carry on monitoring his weight and maybe try to lunge him on non-riding days.
I just don't want to make him miserable in a muzzle or separated from his buddy on a starvation strip. I know he'd be more miserable if he got lammy tho!!!!

Hi Noble,

I'm the same. My highland is slightly overweight and looks like a huge porker beside my little new forest. Everyone tells me she's fine but I still want some weight off of her. A bit of weight off of your one wouldn't hurt but as others say, not majorly obese. :)

I'd say he could definitely do with losing some, as it's better safe than sorry when it comes to lami. On the plus side, he doesn't look too cresty, which is probably a bit more of an indicator.

Sorry but I do think he is overweight, and neither Connies nor Andalusians should have an apple shaped bum but both are good doers, I would either curtail his turnout or put him in a muzzle during the day - also up his workload.
