How good a rider do you think you are??? (Silly post!)

i think im a 7 ish. i compete bsja up to 1.25 so i cant be that rubbish.
i think my legs and seat deserve a 9 though for their stickability!! i surprise myself at some of the things i stay on!!
the joys of youngsters hey.
total loonies some of them!!

I think I'm rubbish but have been told that I'm better than I think I am but I can't cope with all the tecnicalities of modern riding. When I learnt to ride 50 years ago, it was walk, trot, canter and gallop. None of this MEDIUM walk, WORKING trot, which diagonal are you on (who cares!!!) etc nonsense. It was trotting or cantering, what more do you need to know! We just went for nice hacks through the woods and that was enough. The only competing people did was the odd gymkhana. Whatever happened to gymkhanas? Don't kids have fun any more?

This has been interesting reading - seems the youngers posters are more assured of their ability than the older, (wiser?) posters!

Or maybe we're selling ourselves short??????

I have no idea to be honest; what disciplines do you mean in? Equestrianism is such a huge thing that to be good in one discipline does not necessarily mean you are good in another.

Yes I can ride well trained western horses, have tweaked a tune or two out of Prix St Georges horses, am competent at sj and XC, very proficient with bringing on babies.....but as to a rating? Well I don't know, LOL!!

My horse would probably rate me about a 3! My instructor says i sit well but i don't believe her. Definitely below average compared to most folk on here.

4 maybe 5 although I don't consider myself novicey - just not very good! I get very frustrated with my riding. I am a competent, fairly confident and effective rider but I lack style and finesse! Whilst I can get Spring to do what I want her to (mostly!) I worry that my riding is having a negative impact on her training. But this is why I am having lessons and hoping that I am improving!

I'd say 5.5 on the flat on a good day, 3 over jumps on any day. On a bad day, 3!
I have been told I'm quite a good rider once I get over my nerves, I have ridden a fair few friends' horses and done pretty well on them. I am allowed at work to school liveries and horses whose owners are paying for them to come to us to be schooled, so I can't be that bad! However if my nerves get the better of me, I've had it. I was riding a "safe" horse the other day who has a tendancy to get tense, he did it in exactly the way my old pony used to before she tanked off (I lost my confidence with said pony) and so I started to lose it with this horse. However, one I rode today was being very behind the leg so I tapped him with the whip and he bucked - sometimes I would flip out at that but today I just coped.
I suppose I'm ok as long as I think I'm ok!
