How good is your horse to hack ?

Pip is foot perfect, honestly! Never spooks, never get over excited, goes exactly where I say at the exact pace I want. The section B's are all the same too, although they arn't so confident on their own. Ginga doesn't like hacking on his own, but still goes but you can feel his tension.

Better in company and just plods along at whatever pace, great on roads and never naps.

On his own he is very sharp and spooky, never know a horse that can move left, right, left, right so quickly!! I keep telling myself it develops my seat!

Mine is mostly very good! He's utterly lovely in company, and generally very good by himself. But he is not called the spooky pony for nothing! When I first got him, he stopped and planted himself/spun and took off constantly. He is much improved now, though, although I still wouldn't let a novice hack on him. He does have his days of jig-jogging, especially if we've had a gallop.

He is excellent with traffic. But the word "SLOW" painted on the road does make him stop and stare!

I simply couldn't get a better hacking pony. He's desensitized to every machine you can mention, including large plant (thanks to the forestry commission). He gets jiggy going past unusual animals, but considering I'm laughing my head off at him up top, it can't be that bad!

When out off-road on Wednesday night, we came across THREE large fires, left behind by the logging contractors. It looked strange, even to me, but after stopping and looking intently, he just carried on. Insured for only £700, he's bloody priceless, that boy. I'm not even certain I'll get another, when he's gone.

I backed my mare myself and she was hacking out on her own 3 months after backing and has never had a problem with it. She is 18 years old now and is still really go on her own and in company

My gelding is spooky and has ditched me a brought himself home. If in company he is really good and will take lead but on his own i think we were both nervous. I moved to a yard in the country and it really worked for him the cars nearly always pass wide and slow and i have been on 3 hour hacks on my own without any major dramas. I found that if i took him on the same hack a few times in a row it built up both our confidence because we knew the way then when we were both feeling braver we could cope with new hacks and new situations without panicking.

My baby girl's NOT a very good hack...
I enjoy life too much to attempt hacking on my own, but in company she's joggy and spooky in a mostly good hearted way but she does not agree with being asked to do something she's worried about e.g. be first one into the sea.
However, she'll hack fine past JCBs, galloping horses and let fires if she's in the mood to and loves being at the front if you're out with a couple of people!

Both mine hack safely in company in all circumstances. Both can be a little nappy when hacked alone so I avoid taking them in heavy traffic. Horse used to be a real spooker but is much better now. They both have the odd 'things' they are frightened of though.

normally amazing alone or in company on every route we do. infact when first got her the first hack she had done with me and on new roads it was my mums horse what had an oxyshot not mine. but today i went out on my own and i was thinking last night do i or don't i go up to past the gallops as she is an ex race horse and i got up there today and meet some race horses what had obviously just had a quick pratice and my horse just flipped, all of a sudden she was jumpy and just wanted to go.
"wont be doing that on my own again lol"

My arab is fantastic :-) his backing involved throwing on a saddle and climbing on board (and of course mutual trust) we then spent a short time over 2-3 days going round the field then when out on the road. He doesn't spook at anything and is sound as a pound. only thing he doesn't like a bicycles as they are so narrow they flick in and out of his vision when they're nehind him so he tries to bend his head round so he can see them.

Awful, she was good when I backed her but she had a bad injury and alot of time off, then it all went down hill. Her confidence is coming back now though, I hack out with someone walking (or I walk and someone rides), she now goes forward very confidently, just want to keep this up for a few months then will hack her alone again. It has improved already in 3weeks and her bahaviour with others has improved aswell

Erm..pretty appalling really. In company with my friend and her pony, if it's a slow hack, with lots of walking and trotting (and chatting

) tends to decide he's a riding school horse, plod along with his ears back, but still gets pretty upset at anything scary; if it's a fast one in company, after the first canter he gets pretty bad, sometimes jogs a lot, impossible to hold, let alone stop, in canter or gallop, but less spooky.
Alone: pretty much terrifying!

Spooks, bolts when spooked- and doesn't stop once bolting either- and has even been known to throw the odd buck when adamant about something!

Very good most of the time. Had the odd moment when he didn't want to go past something but was sensible about it and so far we've always worked through those moments.

I just found out from one of his previous owners that he used to be driven so that would explain why he's so good in traffic, plus why I had so much trouble with canter transitions when I bought him !

Brilliant, easy, lovely, etc. both in company and on his own. Has always been good really, even at the start. Nothing really fazes him, we even met the shoot last weekend, banging, screaming, waving bags and I was the one that kept jumping, not him.

My TBx is an angel, nothing fazes her, she never spooks, you can wander along and enjoy the view on her.
My sec C is safe in that she doesnt do anything nasty, but you cant sit and watch the world go by because all of a sudden that innocent looking branch may just leap out and attack her!

They both hack out alone and in company. Sec C hasnt done a lot on the roads simply because i dont have to where she is kept, but i would take her on them if i had to and would trust her.

Mine is brilliant. She panics in the field/stable on her own so I was expecting hacking alone to be a nightmare (never really tried before last month). But she loves it. She does jog all the way home, but she's the same in company.

Best was daughters first loan pony 12'2, on a saturday afternoon we would be passed by double decker bus whilst us out hacking which always stopped & the driver would offer pony an apple. The pony would put his head in the drivers window for his treat. Problem came when the driver changed & the pony still insisted on stopping this double decker bus in a country lane & new driver was terrified of pony sticking his head through window lol
