All mine are self loading, to the point that if its just me and one manages to unties themself (usually fred!) i end up with two in one parition and have to take him out and let him in again, all will stand on the lorry/trailer all day and travel like a dream! (unless some one is in the living and has food, i then get neighing, stomping and general starved pony behavour despite the massive haynets!)
Hmm, mine's fine although made a mistake of borrowing a too small trailer to take him to an event a few years back - there was no way in hell he was going to go back in it to go home! Had to catch a lift off someone going in the same direction and then hack the rest of the way!
Loads himself in a box on the way home and I would say always loads well going out although on sunday he decided to haul me in to the box then decide actually didn't want to be in - knocked me off balance launched off the ramp and headed at speed towards the gate with me 'skiing' behind!! Have to say that's the first time in 14 years he's done that - I was NOT amused!!!
^^^ This photo pretty much sums up how i spent quite a lot of time with my old horse...on this particular occasion it took us about 2hrs, in the rain, and in the end about eight people.
He would just plant, then back up at speed, and i couldn't get him to move forwards (him 17hh ISH and me 5'3 and ineffective!
) and neither could various people, including my instructor, YO's 3 sons, etc. He was not usually scared, just stubborn and pretty thick. Found the best way eventually was to do a lot of groundwork a Monty Roberts control halter (and occasionally a lunge whip/broom
), and load into an Equitrek wherever possible, failing that a 7.5 tonne lorry. He was also one for charging down the ramp.
Horse I had this summer would sometimes tow me up the ramp, and sometimes think 'nah not today' and have a hissy fit, but it normally just took some gentle persuasion. Silly TBs
TBF he's normally only stupid when he realises he is travelling in the trailer alone (=hard work) rather than on the lorry with his mates (= hunting
Our boy loads into a trailer or lorry 100%, our youngster has only ever been in a lorry but loads fine, my pony however will not go into trailer for anything but usually loads into a lorry fine; sometimes on the 2nd or 3rd attempt though!
my mare LOVES going out, she would go in the boot of my car if i told her too she doesn't mind what we go in. my gelding on the other hand doesn't load very well at all due to various bad experiences (not to do with me) we are getting there eventually with a trailer and once we have mastered that we will work on lorries
My horse is alright. 90% of the time he will go up about half way, then back up and stand for a bit, maybe pop in the odd rear and then load straight away.
10% of the time he's vile
Rears, spins and bolts miles down the farm, across a ploughed field and along a concrete track 3 times
I wasn't beaten though
Since then he's been his usual "Not yet..oh alright then".
Mine's an absolute star in a trailer or lorry. But, having had difficult loaders in the past, I never take him for granted and he always gets a reward for going in. Same with being caught in the field.
Great in a lorry, especially if there is already something else on. He's ok with trailer but not brilliant. Used to be terrible, now goes on probably 80% of the time with the odd "umm I'm not sure about this" moment. Understandable as he's a big horse and trailer must seem small compared to lorry. Travels well once on though and rarely now (*touches wood*!!) does more than stop on ramp and think about it for a minute.
Ed - fantastic he will load himself and will happily spend all day in the wagon.
Sty - he is getting better. When I first got him it would take hours and hours to get him in. We have now found a routine that works well for him and he loads almost straight away, we are yet to try this anywhere other than at uni and at home so he may no load when it comes to competitions. He has been in a lorry once with me and loaded better in that then the trailer but travels better in the trailer and now we seem to have almost cracked the loading I think he now loads better into a trailer than a lorry.
