Since my gorgeous little girl died and her brother went to live with my ex I have a massive dog shaped hole in my life. Those 2 have left pretty big shoes to fill but I want to offer a good home to a young( 1 to 4 year old) jack russell. I am experienced with terriers and they want for nothing. I have contacted several of the rescue sites and no one gets back to me? Are they so inundated with fantastic homes that they don't need any more? I could just buy one from a private sale but wanted to offer a rescue a home.

Have you tried the West Yorkshire Dog Rescue? I think that I saw a JRT on their Facebook site this week..

Or are they one of the ones that haven't got back to you? They once took six months to reply to us, rang us to ask us to take a dog, and were surprised that we'd already got one from another rescue. They hadn't even acknowledged our email.

I have tried west yorkshire dog rescue and jack russell terrier rescue with no answer. West yorkshire dog rescue seem to charge a heck of a lot for their dogs as well. I can offer an excellent home but don't have a spare £300.

Im fostering a lovely little JR bitch for a rescue in Somerset, she went in for her spay today so its early days for her, Ive had 3 enquiries for her already and I havent even put an assessment up on the site yet. The enquiries were generated because the rescue had posted her on the site with some others that had just literally come in, all enquiries are sent to me via email and I contact the enquirer, they have all ready filled in an online adoption form which is included in the email so I get quite a bit of info before I start. I have rung 2 of them and explained she is not yet house trained and wont be considered for adoption until she is, plus having her spay today. I was able to tell them quite a bit about her, she is a little sweetheart and ask them any questions too. The 3rd enquiry I got today and have rung them but no reply so will try tomorrow. Of the 2 I spoke to I said I would ring them in about 3weeks when I hope I have good news to report on the house training front.

Rescues work in different ways but I would think and hope if you have made an enquiry it would be very remiss of them not to have got back to you. Did you ring and leave a message on an answering machine because they can go wrong, messages deleted by accident, give them the benefit of the doubt and ring again, you have nothing to lose.

Good luck and I hope you are successful.

Yes I agree West Yorks Dog Rescue seem to have hugely increased their prices. I noticed that the other day. When they finally rang me back I said sorry I'd already adopted another dog as I though they weren't interested in us as adopters when they didn't reply. They said they didn't have time to reply to everything, they were flat out, but generally contacted people when thought a dog that would suit appeared. In our case that was 6/7+ months later.

It is a bit disheartening but these places are usually run by 1 or 2 paid staff and the rest are volunteers so it does take a bit of time for people to get back to callers.

This time of year could also be a factor as the Christmas present pups will start rolling in soon if they haven't already :( . Hang in there, it'll all come good in the end :) .

If you have a look at the 'Dogs' section on Preloved, there are 2 on there in kennels awaiting rehome on the first page alone. One is in Doncaster and the other Leeds. I would love to put a link on for you but sadly i'm an idiot. One of them is a rough haired called Ken!!! who is as cute as a button. Both are estimated ages of 3-4 and one has a rehome fee of £100, the other is not specified.

Every time I look at Dogs on Preloved, I am amazed at the numbers of terriers in pounds/ kennels in the North waiting for homes, so it is worth a quick look.

Might be worth joining this group as they do get a lot of dogs.

Also try linbee dog re-homing
https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=linbee dog rehoming

They are based at the same place as Flushdyke - straight off the M1 at Junction 40.

It is worth giving Flushdyke a call as they have a lot of dogs, not all of which are on their website. It is very likely that they will have a Jack Russell. 01924 271 028.

Bear with them when you call. As someone else has mentioned, rescues are stacked out at the moment with the post Christmas throw out and are very busy.

Is is worth visisting a rehoming centre? Do the Dog's Trust have one in your area.

If you are there in person you are harder to ignore!

I must admit it is frustrating though. We had issues last year when trying to find a suitable rescue - apparrently there were no dogs in the UK that were suitable to be rehomed with an elderly cat, and that could be around our nieces and nephews that come to visit. We ended up with a rescue from Spain and I would'nt swap her for the world.

I will give Flushdyke a call tomorrow. I think there is a Dogs Trust in Leeds. What I have noticed on my search for a new partner in crime is the cost of these dogs that are essentially cross breeds.

Try and get your name down for a home offered with as many rescues as you can - years ago when I was looking for a JRT they were homed very very quickly once they arrived. I only got mine because I knew a kennel owner and they let me know when my Rosie came in. By the time I got there half an hour later there were three other people offering if I didn't take her.
BTW I'm also a believer that the right dog will find you so don't stress too much about it, I'm still looking for my next Cavalier but using the time to improve my relationship with the one who is still here

I'd advise going to rehoming centres or pounds in person if you can. Usually they will advertise their opening hours.

I got one of mine by pure chance. My OH had called in to see what their procedures were for rehoming a dog just as Jess was being handed in. She decided she was coming home with him and 4 days later we collected her! She's turned into a right mummy's girl though :D
