How heavy are the stable rugs you use in winter?
I have always had cobs etc and now have a 3/4 TB x ID who i will probably clip out in winter! i have found a rug but its seems excessivly heavy its a 'rambo jumbo wug ' and is 550g

is this the type of weight you use on your thin skinned horses?? in the coldest of winter nights

I don't know what weight mine are but I use a Fal Trojan stable rug in the winter. I then put a Fal liner (with neck) underneath when it is cold / at night. If it is bitterly cold, I put his Thermatex on under the other two to keep him snug!

I tried to keep my mare (ID x) well rugged last winter as she was growing a horrible fluffy coat but I didn't want to clip it off! She mostly wore a 300g (no neck), a 360g (no neck) on colder nights and a 360g (with neck) on very cold nights. It worked well really. If I end up with anything finer I reckon the 360g with the neck that I had for Maiden will be fine on that, unless it is really thin skinned then I'd stick a 100g underneath. I think 550g is a bit excessive unless your horse is a chilly billy and lives in the north of Scotland! Depends on the horse though. I would say aim for about 350g ish and have a fleece or 100g handy for layering just in case

i have a pessoa 400g stable rug on mine, then when its colder at night he has a weatherbeeta under rug (220g) with a neck on underneath that. he feels the cold tho.

My ID's heaviest stable rug is 300g (Amigo) and he was very warm in that. Hardly used it last winter really. Old cob is in layers if necessary up to 500g including a neck cover.

I have the rambo jumbo wug, but wish I hadn't bought it because when its cold enough to use it I prefer to use a fullneck, and its only a half neck! His switches between a 200gm, a 350gm and 400gm full neck, and occasionally his jumbo wug, depending on the weather. He's a cob, but gets really cold in the stable.

Little Black One (drippy, thinks he's delicate sec B) has a 375g stable rug & a 400g turnout for when it's really cold.
He is however, never clipped & would certainly require something more if he was I think! (Duvet, infra red lamp & hot water bottle probably!)

Baggage (native type) has a 200g stable & a 220g turnout but she isn't usually clipped either! If she was, she might need something a little more!

My tb fully clipped wears a 350g stable rug with full neck if she comes in. She is happier living out and wears a 450g turnout with full stable access and is fine. She has never appeared to be cold and holds condition well but I have been known to put an extra fleece on her if really cold but I think that it keeps me happier rather than her needing it!

Mine has a 200g full neck weatherbeeta liner rug and a 300g amigo ontop. Occasionally will have a fleece underneath if needed. He is a 16.1hh ISH but isnt a cold horse, and is normally fully clipped. IMO layering is alot more cost effective and also warmer than one big heavy rug!!

I don't tend to use stable rugs. Horse goes out as early as poss in the morning, comes in as late as poss in the afternoon/evening and I don't usually have time for changing rugs. Plus, if he comes in soaking wet then the rugs don't dry unless I leave them on him - I don't like taking them off, leaving them wet over night and then putting them back on, wet, in the morning.

He actually only has 2 stable rugs, a fleecey type and a 200g full neck Masta.

I have the Jumbo stable wug and have to use a Horseware full neck under rug underneath for most of the winter (350g).. in the depths, he then usually has to have something else on also.

Turnout.. he has a both a Rambo Duo (450g with the heaviest liner) and a Supreme (450g). Last year, I ended up switching to the Supreme and having to add an extra duo lining putting the rug to 750g.

Im expecting this year to be worse since we moved from the UK to Denmark! :P That being said, my horse is the absolute extreme and has to be rugged 90% of the year and is never clipped as it would just be a nightmare.

Most "heavy" stable rugs run at around the 350g - 400g mark. You can then get underrugs in varying weights with either full or part necks to help you layer. The jumbo stable rug is meant to be a very very heavy winter rug so i certainly wouldn't start with anything this weight.

Is he rugged already? If so what weight? Id look at buying a standard h/w rug and see how he goes with that.

Rug by how your horse feels rather than by how other people do. You'll soon start to get to grips with how much he feels the cold and can then start judging by the temperature outside.
