Been talking to a friend and we're planning to go to a nice (from what ive heard) xc course in a couple of months once horses are fitter. Jumps start at 50cm

Jimmy is 6 this year and hasn't done any xc yet. He is a coloured cob but not the heaviest, he does have feather though.

is it important to buy xc boots for him or will his brushing boots be enough to protect him. We'll only be jumping the smallest fences that look easy to me as i haven't done xc either

Brushing boots are better than nothing, i would always have some sort of boots on for xc, including over reach boots. Personally id put proper xc boots on, just think how upset will you feel if he fluffs it up and puts his legs down on/in a solid fence (which young/ unsure horses can do) and hurts himself? The XC boots tend to be alot more protective and will help if he bashes himself off a fence, where the brushing boots really dont have much protection of the front cannon bone area, just at the side for brushing.

having had my horse panic and put his legs in a xc jump (which wasnt big, only 80cm), i was glad he had his xc boots on! He was fine.

Mine doesn't wear boots jumping logs on hacks, hunting etc ;) at 50 cm I really wouldn't worry about using brushing boots.

If you're not hurtling around and being careful over small fences he would be fine without or with brushing boots. I've seen quite a few boots come off when horses put down in fences anyway. I would always do over reach boots.

As he hasn't done it before, I'd put overreach and some sort of protective boots on him - NOT tendon boots as they are open in front and don't protect the area most likely to receive a knock.

Without wanting to sound thick, why over reach boots? Are they more likely to over reach out xc or is it to protect from the jump?

In the excitement of going XC, they can overreach and tread on themselves . . . I always put OR boots on Kal when he hunts/goes XC because the way of going is quite different from SJ and I've seen some nasty OR injuries.

Thanks PS. I will be sure to buy some :) I did buy some a couple of years ago but can't get the damn things on lol, need some that open to be fastened :)
