How important is turnout to you?

So who's it to be?

Linx goes out everyday from 7am until 1pm ish (if weather is good) if not he'll come in 10ish. at the start of the winter we choose either 1/2 day every day turnout or full day every other day turnout. which i think is quite fair.

we have 'field' turnout but it is mainly mud, we also have a concrete pen & hardcore area we can use if not going out as well as a floodlit school to ride/lunge in

Wouldn't dream of putting my hard working horses out in the winter. They come in sept/oct time and don't go out again till april/may!

Gosh, really??

The hunters on my yard would go absolutely stir crazy without any turnout - despite each hunting twice a week.

It's not just about grass, it's about social interaction, stretching legs, relaxation, not confined, fresh air............

We have such beautiful winter days sometimes, it seems such a shame to keep them cooped up.

That's interesting because I wouldn't dream of keeping my hard working horses in during the winter. Surely after a long day's hunting they are better off turned out where they can have a good roll, walk around to avoid stiffness and munch hay with their friends.

at the moment 6 of mine are out 24/7
and one is in at night - he goes out for the day - anytime from 6am and some nights has been known not to come in until 10pm! all depends on his mood as he can be a stroppy old git and if he sees me make up a haynet ready for the night before he goes out - he refuses to go out !!! (or is in a strop if i make him!)

As mine have now had this amount of turnout, and i have seen how happy they are - i will now Never consider somewhere without the turnout for them.

in my opinion - each horse is different but horses are meant to be out, as long as they are happy, have shelter etc then i think the majority of horses would prefer to be out rather than cooped up in a 12x12 (or whatever size) stable for the majority of the day/night.

I do find it odd that that person said she wouldnt put her "hard working horses out in the winter" - thats almost like saying you wouldnt let a fit collie dog out of a cage during the winter months except maybe for an hour for exercise....... Same idea! I think too many people wrap their horses up in cotton wool and totally forget what is genuinely good for them.

AmyMay is right, its not about the grass but being outside where they should be chilling out with their pals! Cant believe horses stabled 24/7 never get to just "be a horse", it really upsets me TBH!
