Bit of backgroung first, Beauty is a 44 year old mare. She has dropped a bit of weight this past week as it has been freezing !! She has also lost what little muscle she had because they are in for the winter now.

She is not as dirty as the photos make her look ! She is always rugged up and groomed twice daily.

She looks amazing, I've seen horses 10 years younger who don't look as good as she does, actually I've seen horse 20 years younger who look more aged. Beauty is a lovely lady and you clearly look after her very well, she's lucky to have you :)

Looks amazing at her age. If she's dropping muscle tone I've heard strapping is very good for keeping it although I would do a bit more research to make sure it's appropriate for such an old horse. Also, she may not like it :p

Is that stable all the space she will have for the winter?
If she has dropped a lot of weight suddenly she might need a vet check as the temperatures (if your in the UK) aren't that cold..

She doesn't just stay in the stable all winter that would be awful

She is turned out for 2 hours in the morning (max turnout time), then she gets walked down to some unfenced fieilds where I usually sit with a book or some revision with her on a lunge line, we normally stay down there for 2/3 hous, then I'll bring her back up to the farm. Then she'll be in the stable for a few hours until I come back where we will go for another walk, then she'll be turned out for another 2 hours. Then before she is in for the night we will either go for another walk or I will lead her whilst riding Ted.

Then she'll be in for the night.

I didn't rug up adaquatly last week, I kept either over rugging or under rugging

she looks fantastic :) Its so difficult atm as the weather forecast lies to you! I have a weather app on my iphone which I check just before rugging up (and a whiteboard saying what rugs are to be worn at which temperature so I dont umm and ahh) but even then it isnt necessarily right and will often change its mind about how cold it will go at 12pm at night. She looks amazing cant believe shes 44! clearly reflecting all the love and care shes been given :)

My aunt has horse of a similar age to your lovely mare, she looks much more worse for wear than beauty! She has one eye, terribly sway backed and has all of three teeth!

She was my much loved childs pony, and is a dear old friend to all the family. I'm wondering if this will be her last winter.....

It's so admirable to see someone taking on the responsibility of an elderly horse, they deserve the same, if not more love & care than any horse :)

She's looking great. Your routine of taking her for walks and grazing brings back memories of doing the same with my old man, I used to love those times together. She's so lucky to have found you x x

Awwww wow 44, what are you feeding her ?!!? I'd like some please :) We've got a mare down our yard who's 38 and you could pass her as a teenager!!
I'd be very chuffed if I were you !

she's a grey version of my 40 yr old! ha ha! she looks fine to me. i wouldnt strap tego- although her weight is good for her age and dental state, she still feels like an old lady when you give her a pat (a it thin skinned and boney!). i wouldnt bash my granny.... so im not going to bash the old lady! ha ha!

good luck with her over the winter, ;) fingers crossed the oldies do well!

xx

Thank you for all your kind comments, she thinks she is a yearling still ! Squealing and trying to canter off when I ride and lead.

She is currently on

D+H 16 plus mix
D + H Condition Cubes
D + H pasture mix
Speedi beet
We soak all of the above

and ad lib chaff :)

She looks wonderful!! My old lad was 36 when he went and I thought he was a good age!! I gave sunny Old Faithful, Happy hoof and KwikBeet, but Beauty's diet sounds very tasty and plenty of 'good' calories for an oldie.
Dont you just love old neddy cuddles too...they are the best!! xx
