How late is too late to phone the hunt?

Poor horse, I think it's admirable the OP is helping out where it sounds like help is required. Hopefully the situation has moved forward for the benefit of the horse.

I'm guessing you didn't read the original post.

I read all of them. The OP later states the owner has learning difficulties and she wants to get it done 'before he changes his mind'. She obviously suspects he may do so, so why get involved at all? The horse is well enough to run around when the hunt come through, I wouldn't be arranging to get it shot the next day on the say-so of an owner who does not seem to be able to make up their own mind on the matter.

My little lad would run around like a loon if the hunt came, because he's 'well enough' unfortunately it would almost certainly result in him being very lame after the fact. With his previous history, which is extensive, and his age, I'd would be very very worried and a call to the vet to pts wouldn't be out of the question if he wasn't right again within a few days. If colic came on top, I'd be phoning there and then.

It sounds like the OP has been involved with this old horse for quite some time and has seen it deteriorate, this may be the final straw for the old lad. I would do the same thing in the OPs shoes, I can't stand watching horses that are clearly done with life desperately and miserably carry on with life because the owner can't/won't, for whatever reason, face the truth.

Agree totally. My vet once told me that a horse with a broken leg will still run around if it is excited enough. I came up to do my old girl once and she was horrendously stiff and lame all round. I decided to let her have the night then if she was no better call the vet and have her put down ( she was old and arthritic). Luckily she was ok the next day and I subsequently found that something had set them off and she had been hooning about in the paddock on hard summer ground. She went on to live another 4 years.

Glad it all went well and a pat on the back from me too. People should get involved when someone isn't coping looking after their animals and causing them suffering. I hope someone does for mine if I'm ever not sound of mind and needing help..

Doesn't take away the fact that the horse does/did not belong to the OP. I would not get involved with taking the decision to put down somebody elses horse or arrange it; because of the possible legal repercussions if nothing else.

Yes I agree animals do need people looking out for them even if they aren't their owners. However we do have to be careful that owners don't find themselves being guided/coerced by horse people who are perhaps not very experienced.

Glad it went peacefully FM. The horse was very, very lucky to have you on his side. Knowing how difficult the past few years have been for it, today was a release.

The owner was also lucky to have your support during this difficult time.
