Hello, pls could I ask someone with more experience than me (you all qualify!) when is the latest I could sensibly leave making the decision about whether I put my mare in foal this year? I don't really have much understanding yet of how long things take. It would prob be AI if that makes any difference.

Thank you! (i have done a shopping spree on books to read up on everything, but they haven't arrived yet..)

You'll probably want to leave yourself at least 6 weeks to give yourself time for a couple of attempts if you're using fresh or chilled AI from a stallion in the UK (or with frozen semen already in the UK). To be sure, you'd want to start proceedings (getting vet out and getting semen sent) by the middle of June at the latest, so you've got time before your mare starts having irregular cycles and/or starts transitioning out, and so you don't have a REALLY late foal. I'd try to make your decision by the end of April at the very latest.

If you're using frozen semen, or continental stallions then you will probably want to give yourself even more time.

Bit garbled, but I hope that helps. I'm sure others will have some useful ideas

AndyPandy has pretty much said all the necessary wise words on the subject - so I'm just going to be nosey and ask you to tell us more about your mare, and what stallions you are considering for her?

Hello!
It's early days yet but its for my coloured mare - i did post a pic of her in here a week or so ago (think i called it 'opinions please'- she's a smartish lightweight cob. If you can see the post would love to know what you think. Looking to breed a really decent all rounder for myself.

Researching stallions at the mo - prob TB would be sensible i guess as she is a bit short/chunky. Not fussed if its coloured but did see a nice coloured irish event stallion today on the web, can't remember his name at mo (begins with G and is two words!) but will post when i can remember and see what people think. Am new to this so this forum is a godsend.

Hello, no but I've just googled him - he is nice! The one I was thinking of was Glenhill Gold.
Do you think Harlequin would be light enough for my mare? The info I found said breeding unknown but see he has Samber in the bloodlines.
