My circumstances have changed considerably recently and I find myself unable to keep all my horses. I am considering euthanising my retired horse. I was hoping that it might be possible to find him a loan home where he can baby some youngsters or be a companion generally. He is low maintenance but does eat a lot of hay in the winter!

Wondering what my chances are really, possible that my circumstances may change in a year or two but not definite. I know that you guys are the experts so maybe you can help!

I'd say you would be really lucky to find a decent companion home. I know people do want them buy I would only loan to close friends/family if it were my old horse. Good luck

I'd love a companion but I've only thought lightly about it just now. I've had a little look online and nothing ticks my boxes. Don't suppose your in Scotland?!

You may find it hard this time of year but who knows you may get lucky. I took a old companion on and he will stay until the end so homes are out there it's just finding on. I was given mine free but tbh u would be better of loaning

I will eventually want a companion for my other two when my oldie passes on. Homes are out there.

All you can do is to try and see if you can find a suitable home. If you cannot, you have to rethink your options.

It is possible, I have an old hunter here to keep my youngster company he is about 22 and not 100% sound but happy pootling around the paddock.

Lots of people get small ponies as companions then realise how difficult they are to manage with a big horse (restricted grazing, escaping through fences etc.) and then move on to having a companion that more matches the need of their ridden horse. You may well find someone who wants to give ad lib hay to their ridden horse and therefore needs a companion that can have ad lib hay too (without being crippled!). It would be worth asking around. If you can't find someone (or he comes back to you at short notice) you'll only end up back at the same PTS position you are in now. So if he's local and you can check on him regularly you've nothing to lose.

We brought a companion for £500 so people will take them. I wouldn't just give him away as you never know where he may end up, but you could put him on full loan. Or how about contacting a rescue home?
I don't agree with just putting animals down just because they are older and the owner doesn't want anyone else having them or the owner can't afford them any more, although there are people on here that will disagree.

Is it in his bests interests though? If a companion home can be found locally with someone to love and care for him then it would be great, but would you really want to send him away to an unknown person miles away? I have had horses PTS in the past rather then send them to an uncertain future as an old horse.

I'm on phone so can't see your profile. I don't think I could make the decision just now- it's merely an idea and I'd be looking for something no bigger than 14hh. I hope you find him a lovely home x

Thanks so much for all the ideas guys! I wouldn't give him away or sell him, it would have to be a loan with a contract to protect him. Even if i got him back in a few months because it didn't work out it wouldn't be too bad because one of the others will be sold by then. I haven't advertised him as i rather hoped i would find someone through someone i know and not have to. I wouldn't be putting him down because he's just old either!! He's actually only 18.
