im having my new gypsy cob delivered on sunday and was wondering how long to let her settle in or does anyone start as they mean to go on and ride the day after

I've always ridden the same day :s I just don't see it as any different to going to a show and riding there....

I have always given my horses a week to settle in, I know lots of people ride the same day. I think it is nice for them to feel settled and secure in their new surroundings and get to know and trust me etc before riding.

iv been going to see her every day for 2 weeks and theres only me been riding her in that time i dont want to leave her too long as shes really fizzy anyway but dont want to upset her by riding too soon

Why not ride her but just for a little bit then. It depends on how young the horse is too.

I would just start as you meant to carry on but taking it easy and spending a bit more time to let her settle, i.e no pressure or asking for anything which might cause stress.

shes 6 yyrs old but still very green so rides like a unbalanced 3yr old she has been passed about a bit so not wanting to push her too much im thinking of 2 half hour rides next week then up it a little from there

I always work new horses the day after I get them home (so long as they are in work). If a horse is used to regular work why would you give them a week to get their feet under the table and get fizzy????? I won't ask big questions of them for the first few days, but will give them a bit of a flatwork session, a hack and a small jump. I normally aim to take the horse somewhere after about 5 days, either to a small competition/ hack/ school away from home just so they are kept on the ball, and it gives me a chance to weigh up what needs working on etc.

I also stop any hard feed a horse is getting for the first week (unless the horse is in a particularly poor condition). This enables me to evaluated what the horse is really like without feed masking the true character, and also may help if the horse is a bit fizzy and not being worked as hard as normal. I can then devise my own feeding plan for the horse.

Always ride the next day, gives them a chance to settle in, have a look around and get used to new and busy yard without adding stress of new rider into the mix

Next day a bit of schooling so that we both get the feel of each other and then most often the day after out hacking with two big sensibles (who can sandwich us out of trouble if needed) and then settle into routine of work.

We always leave them at least a week so they can get used to the new area and start learning about and to trust their new owners.

I gave my boy 48 hours then went for a hack to show him the place. It's nice for them to meet their new buddies, smell the place and get use to new sounds (mine is on a farm).
hope you have fun

Depends on the horse and whether they are in work or not- I picked one up from old owners and took it straight to a show- poor horse did different activity each day and then did a intro exactly 7days after arriving.

A couple of the 3yr olds have been sat on the day after and the polo ponies crack on imdiatly to fit in with the rest of the "herd".

Depends on horse, character etc, and what job you bought him for, I would say nothing wrong with 10min plod around school and walk up quiet road for first few days though! I think main thing don't do anything you dont feel confident to do as that is not a good combi!

Enjoy your new pony!!
